Is the HK USP outdated?

Say you lived in a free state where you could purschase the P30LS or VP9 instead of the USP, would you still buy a USP?

How does the USP and the P30LS compare, which one is "better"?

I had a usp 9mm at one time it was accurate and reliable however i sold it. I wouldnt mind a compact though.

I got a USP45c an HK45 and a VP9. Used to have a P2000.

I like the newer HKs like the P30, VP9, and HK45. But nothing wrong with thr USP. The USP is one of the most accurate guns for me to shoot.

The only thing I consider outdated about the USP is the proprietary rail system; it honestly amazes me that after multiple decades H&K still hasn't released a model yet where the frame has a standard M1913 Picatinny rail on it, and owners still have to resort to either buying an aftermarket part to essentially attach a Pic rail to the proprietary rail or be willing to accept themselves to limiting themselves to lights/lasers/items that can mount on the USP-specific rail.

Otherwise I would certainly not consider it outdated; it's a 1990's design, and honestly one of the DA/SA pistol designs that's managed to stand the test of time and somehow manage to continue staying in production, of which I would think it's ludicrous field testing contributes heavily to it's continued production and use.

I'm an HK usp fan but don't need one of everything they market thereafter

other manufacturers make better guns for some of the other applications

The Hk Usp 40 is one of very few guns designed around 40 S&W. Not a 9mm conversion.
The Usp 40 Is absolutely one of my favorite Pistols.
Extremely accurate, fits my Baseball mit hands , the texture and Grip are great. When I bought mine in 2000. Most people I knew had Glocks in 9mm , 40 S&W and 45 A.C.P. When they shot my Usp most were very impressed with the Piece.
Down fall is the Rail , and Mags are pricey if you can find them . ..... And no factory 10mm option.

I think the whole obsolete idea is a result of clever marketing that is designed to convince the low information public that they need to buy whatever manufacturers are currently producing. They know that there is a large number of buyers that are easily swayed into believing that they just have to have the latest and greatest.

I have a USP 45 and I can't even begin to describe how much I like it. Yes it is large, but then it was never designed to be a one size does anything type of handgun. Since I don't hang lights on a gun, I couldn't possibly care any less about the light rail.

Mine shoots more accurately than I can, is very, comfortable to shoot and because it was a polymer frame is roughly the same weight as a 1911 when both are loaded, except it holds more rounds. I paid $495 for mine used off of Gunbroker a few years back and while magazines are a little pricey, in reality they are are about the same as any other European manufacturers OEM mags. If I recall, I paid about $50 each for HK factory 12 rounders and that is exactly the same as I paid for factory CZ75 mags.

I also have a P30S and I really like it too, but I am way more in love with the USP.

I would definitely choose the P30/HK45 lineup over the USPs.

The HK USP45 is a classic and will never go “out of style” because it is well designed, rugged, reliable and accurate (like a modern 1911). The size is perfect for large hands and sure I wished they made one with a normal rail interface but HK never gives you what you want only what they think you need so get used to it.

In any event, HK is not the type of manufacturer whose designs seem to become "outdated". I give you the P7 series of design as a great example.

I have owned the USP, P30, HK45 and VP series as well as the P2000's. I kept my USP's and sold the rest. I regret letting go of the P2000 and P2000sk. Why? Because this is a Chevy vs Ford type opinion. I prefer my USP's that I have had over 250k rounds through bone stock, along with my Chevrolet pickup trucks

I dont play with my USP as much since I got a longslide kit for my VP9. Clovers at 25 yds.

I could never understand this "outdated" thing. Does it go bang when you pull the trigger? Does it hit the mark? Does it use a modern readily available cartridge? (well, "readily available" in normal times)
If the answer to all three is "yes" - it is just as good as the day it left the factory. It's a gun, not an iPhone.
Unless it has some serious design flows that affect safety, reliability and/or accuracy. Which to the best of my knowledge USP has none.

If you want a basic light on your USP, you can actually get a couple Streamlights that are compatible and lock right onto the USP rail without a adapter... TLR-3, TLR-4. Not the newest brightest designs but they work for $90-$200 (125 lumen - 160 lumen, laser, no laser designs). I have a TLR-3 and it works fine on an Expert... have a TLR-4 on a Glock and it is a decent old light.
