    1911 Compensator, worth a try?

My bushing comp was about $50 from Wilson.

It does help, but not much. People who say they do nothing have never used one, it's clear they work if you shoot them back to back.

That said, I ended up taking it off. All though it works, it works best with full steam ammo and instead I just load stuff lighter. It also adds considerable length to the gun, the thing looks like a cannon with the comp on.

I used a $40 Valkyrie comp on my first 1911, a non railed TRP. I was an inexperienced shooter back then but for some reason it made my groups a heck of a lot better. Don’t think it was that much more of a flat shooter but I think the weight upfront helped

Comp effectiveness increases with hotter loads (more gas = more effect), though you'll also get a little less muzzle rise due to added weight at the front.

Whether it's worth it or not is subjective.

I felt no difference when shooting a .45 with a comp. A .38 super or 9mm major is where they ready start to work.

Why do you want a comp?

Some of the old timers switched to 9mm due to recoil

Massad Ayoob and some of the original gun sight folks.

A comp is a way to solve an issue.

What is the issue you want to solve with a comp?
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

              Good question,
The issue I want to solve: $458 in Brownells credit. I’m really wanting to pick up a Glock 19, but I don’t think they will get a CA compliant anytime soon.
The idea of having less muzzle flip is intriguing. I’m having fun modifying a Springfield 1911 Loaded Target 9mm. Front strap checkering, under cut trigger guard, Dawson precision FO front sight. All of which aren’t solutions to prior issues. Its more or less a range gun that I’m having a good time with. In the past, I would shoot a few thousands rounds to really get more proficient with a new gun. Now I’m down to my lowest round count of 9mm ever. So maybe I’m compensating for not being able to shoot as much? Probably not the best strategy.

Your load has to be really hot for bushing type comp to have any effect, for that matter even for the real comp out there. Comp works by venting expanding pressure gas at different angles to help muzzle raise and felt recoil. Because bushing comp muzzle need to clear the barrel, most of the expanding gas will escape from the front instead the side. Real comp muzzle diameter is just slightly larger to the barrel.

So besides adding weight to the tip of your muzzle (BTW does help muzzle raise), some people just like the look. I used the Punisher comp to add length to my slide so I can run 6" barrel under it.

Someone will be along with the MATH for a comp...

Lots of Gas and a small bore diameter make a comp / brake work.

Brakes on 12 gauges don't seem to work as the math is wrong.... big diameter hole.. .727... and pressure 11,000

(for reference 308 - 30 caliber bore and 62,000 PSI)

The 45 is a similar critter.... the large bore to 21,000 PSI - comps don't work as well

The 38 Super- 36,000 PSI and a bore diameter of 356 vs 45

If you have a brownells credit... tell us more...

Have you ever thought about parkerizing parts in your garage?

Value for Value- Buy quality Mags... Quality mags can be resold for close to what you paid in Normal Times if they are new in packaging...

If you have a flinch and are pushing shots low- training - classes is an answer- not a comp... In my opinion....

the 460 rowland would be a reason for a comp- so you don't crack the frame... I don't know if brownells sells the conversion kits or not....

You are shooting a great fun easy to shoot gun…and you are worried about muzzle flip…?

I have a SA Loaded 9mm and there is barely any lift…you are a weenie!

Your gun, money and issue…your choice. Just kidding of course. Might as well get it and solve the question…but I absolutely love mine just the way the built it…except for my old eyes. Put a Dawson FO front sight on…otherwise, shoot it.

Good luck on the using up the credit…
Worried? Nah, not me. And you are the wimp weenie! Recoil/muzzle flip isn’t really an issue for me. I haven’t met a recoil I don’t like. Its not that. I am very happy with the Loaded Target 9mm. Originally I was going to get a DW PM9, but my Dad refused to gift me his! to be honest, I really don’t like the look of the compensator. Its a bit much. So to your point, there’s really no reason to get a compensator.

Besides a compensator, try having the barrel ported. I’ve had positive outcome from both Magnaport.com and sastactical.com on several of my pistols.

I had shot a Colt Defender with a 3 port comp. It was heavily worked on, so the experience is at least partly due to the other work done to it, in addition to the comp.

With hotter loads, it does help appreciably. It essentially is a compact 1911 that shoots like a full size one.
