    S&W 686+ grip recommendation

Just recently got my S&W 686+ 6" that looks great with the wood grip. Took it to the range today, it definitely is very accurate handgun and fun to shoot. With the 6" and full underdog recoil was not bad with 158gr magnum loads. Even the 180gr Buffalo Bore heavy loads were ok. Definitely more recoil than my 45 or 9mm Glocks, but not bad at all.

While it was a pleasure to shoot and recoil didn't feel too bad, I did notice the skin in my palm got chewed up a bit in a small spot after 70 or 80 rounds of 357 mag, mostly 158gr (and some 180gr).

Looking to see if I can get nice rubber grips for range trips when I will shoot quite a few rounds.

Hogue grips seem pretty good, was wondering if anybody have experience with them. I was looking at these

Sounds like you might have gotten the deluxe model

The mongrips work well-its similar to the stock grips of the non deluxe model
I would stay away from the bantam grips if your hands are medium to small sized plus they leave more of the metal back strap exposed

Yep, got the Deluxe model. I normally get XL gloves and can sometimes squeeze into L gloves in a pinch.

I have the S&W rubber grips on mine and they work much better than the smooth wood grips that also came with the gun (used, from a CGer).

All I can say is same, mine came with the stock rubber grips and I've not had issues. Pretty vs comfort I guess is the decision. And I'm not against pretty necessarily.

I went the opposite way, had hogue rubber grips
and switched to pachmayr wood grips. Just right!

I have two N frame model 327 .357's. One has the S&W wood grips that have a bit of a sharp edge that doesn't sit flush with the frame. After less than 100 rounds of 158gr magnum loads it will cause the web of my hand to bleed. The other has the rubber Hogue grips. I can go +200 rounds of 158gr magnums without any issues. So yes they make a huge difference. I don't like the look of the rubber grips and they tend to catch on fabrics or clothing. I would like to try the VZ G10 grips.

I like this kind on round butt revolvers. Not sure if they still make it.

I have the 686 pro series. It comes with beautiful wood grips on and hogue grips in the box. Shot it at the range with the wood and then switched to the hogues...so much more comfortable to shoot with the rubber Hogues.

The hogues are awesome. I have the smaller version on my 10.

I have tried many brands of rubber grips over the years and found these to be the best revolver grips. Pachmayr Diamond Pro

Open back grips will still have metal of the frame against your palm. It's going to be easier on your palm than the wood grips, but if you are really looking for something to avoid callouses, you should look at grips that have rubber covering the back of the frame.

I'm not sure who makes them these days, S&W made very nice ones for their Night Guard series of guns, the X-frames have covered back (check fit, sometimes they work on smaller frames), Pachmayr made grips with soft rubber in that area, and there might be a few more.

My 686 + pro came with rubber hogue grips and is fantastic. I do need some wood grips for looks but will shoot as is.

                              Congratulations on your 686+ !

They are great and fun firearms to own and shoot. That's a lot of .357 to shoot in one day though! No wonder your hands suffered. Normally most will shoot more .38's than .357 mags when just out for a fun day shooting...

I too prefer the rubber grips over the wooden ones S&W supplied on all of my Smiths, especially when shooting any .357 mag ammo. I've never had the rubber bother me when I carry with the rubber grips though some prefer the wood grips when they carry. For me, getting a good grip with the rubber grips is more important than any potential slight rubbing they may induce.
