STI 2011 in Cali?

Hello All:

My step father, in Texas, wants to give me a STI 2011 for Christmas. Can I just bring it back with me, and register it, or since its not on the list, is this a no-no.

Obviously, I wouldn't bring the hi-cap mags back.

If you're not bringing back the standard-cap mags and it is a legally purchased gift from your father to you, I don't see why not? Just make sure you do the mandatory voluntary paperwork to register it when you bring it back.

AFAIK, no, you may not. You can only bring in the handguns if you are moving here, and since your dad is not a resident of the state, you can't PPT. You also can't intrafamilial transfer it to you, since it would involve importing a non-approved handgun.

Hmmmm... I'm not a legal expert but I don't see why your father couldn't give you a gift from TX just like he could from CA? Someone have the CA codes on that one?

Also, I thought all firearm transfers over state lines have to be done through an FFL, and since the gun is not approved, it cannot go through an FFL so you can't have it.

Gift-transfers from direct family members are exempt from the requirement of having the pistol on the approved list. You are good to go. Since you are apparently getting this gun post-1997 you will need to fill out the DOJ personal importer form within 30 days after you bring it back into CA after visiting you family in TX over X-mas where you were presented with the gift.

Immediate family, meaning parents and grand parents. Siblings, uncles etc are NOT ok.
