    Importing a Revolver

I would like to buy a 22lr revolver perhaps off GunBroker. And I was wondering if the item is off roster and not C&R candidate can I buy such item. Am I still restricted from purchasing? I am fuzzy on the legal side as it relates to revolvers.

Single action revolvers are largely exempt from the roster. The revolver barrel has to be 3" or more, and the overall length has to be at least 7.5"

unless it meets dimension requirements and can be converted to single action for DROS

Just brought one home this week

There are ways to convert some revolvers from double-action to single-action only. S&Ws are easy. Not sure how hard Colts and Rugers are.

I have bought five or six off-roster wheel guns and had them shipped in using the Single Action Exemption. My FFL allows me to convert the gun at his desk after he receives it. He then processes the DROS and ten days later I pick up the gun. I then convert it back to its original format. As I said...pretty easy with the S&Ws.

Ruger is simple, I bet easier than S&W. It took me about 2 minutes to restore my new GP100 to DA.

Great it's a SW. Is there a FFL in San Francisco Bay Area who can do the conversion?

Or should I ask where do I get the part to convert to single action.

Any chance you could PM me details? There's a Lipsey's special GP100 in .44 Special I'm lusting after.

Watch this video starting at 1:10 to see how easy the hammer comes out. Then install the DA hammer dog, along with it's plunger spring and plunger back into the hammer and retain with the hammer dog pin (you don't even need tools to do that) and drop the hammer right back in.

In this pic the arrow is pointing at the hammer dog, that is what needs to be removed for single action. The pin holding it in is a slip fit, no hammer required to remove.

It's not a matter of adding but of removing a part. DA/SA revolvers have a DA sear and a SA sear. The DA sear is generally called a "dogleg" for some reason, it's the spring powered metal tab on the leading edge of the hammer.

With varying degrees of ease and simplicity, you remove the DA sear by popping out the pin, not losing the spring/plunger and returning the now S/A hammer to the gun.

Ruger, Taurus, Dan Wesson and Charter Arms are easy as heck - especially Ruger and Charter Arms, no need to even remove the trigger. S&W is easy too, although earlier models (the ones we usually like) require driving out a pretty well seated pin. Colt is a bit of a PITA, the pin is in there pretty good.

With respect to when this should be done - depends on the sending and receiving FFL. I've read some sellers won't ship to CA unless it's done, which is of course a challenge. Some receiving FFLs want it done before they start DROS, regardless of who does it.

The below video is very good. The only thing I would add is that there's a bit of feel and finesse needed when reseating the hammer. You'll need to bring the trigger back about 1/4 pull and hold it, this gets the DA pawl on the trigger to about 10 o'clock. This should make easier dropping in the hammer so that the DA pawl on the trigger slips in between DA sear and lower body of the hammer.

You can't break or hurt anything by fiddling with it. If the hammer seats and the pivot pin holes line up you're done. Takes longer to describe than to do. Also works the same on Charter Arms, another solid frame revolver that folks sometimes shy away from.
