Question about handgun hate?

Most of it is just drama. There are real reasons to dislike guns and many people have had experiences, but the "hate" is pure drama.


The Sigma hate I think is more historical than anything. Betrayal (felt by end-users) and backlash would be the words I would use to describe it. Remember, they cost about the same as a Glock when they first came out.

While I certainly don't hate Glocks, I strongly dislike them only because they are so uncomfortable to hold. I do respect their reliability however.

I'll jump in on this one

My Taurus experienece... bought a new tracker .357 revolver. Took it out to the range....2 shots, then cylinder jam. The headspace between the cylinder and the frame was too close, so heads of rounds would rub against the frame. Then noticed that the plating was coming off the hammer after (2) shots! Then discovered that the cylinder would free spin (intermittently) while in the frame....sent back to Taurus with listing of issues...they sent back after 4 months, with only a new hammer Sent it back again for the main issues, another 4 months later it came back...8 months and two trips to Taurus.

It was my first and last Taurus......EVER! I don't hate...I just don't give $$ to crappy service\product.

I think a man's brand of gun is very important: much like his brand of car or beer. Freedom loving types tend to be even more loyal to their brand. I guess we are sentimental. My reasons not to buy a Taurus is...

1) They are Brazilian (3rd world manufacturer)
2) SW makes better guns, are US made (usually), and have more history
3) Taurus did have some quality control issues before.
4) I'm not a revolver guy, but when I think revolver I think SW.

Now these reasons can be taken apart easily and aren't very rational, but like many of us, my heart guides my purchases much more than pragmatism.

of course that being said i would never fire a hi-point,lorcin,jennings in any caliber greater than .25

Yes, they get a bad wrap because they're ugly and cheap and made from cheaper materials, but they work. You've admitted you've never fired one. I have a C9 I bought used for less than $100 as a curio, but it shoots as well as my Ruger P89 or Steyr M9-A1, and is just as reliable. I've yet to have it jam on me. That's a hell of a lot more than I would ever expect from my $100 "Ghetto Glock".

I don't hate them, but I think Desert Eagle .50AE are a pain to shoot. It gets tiresome quickly when a heavy brass case is consistently bouncing off your forehead every single round without fail.

Another pistol I wouldn't care to ever shoot again is the Charter Arms Bulldog .44 Spl. It just hurts my hand to shoot it. Six rounds and I was done with it.

My good friend is like this about Glocks. He doesn't just draw the line at not liking how they feel/shoot. He proclaims them to be the most absolute worst, cheap, PLASTIC guns out there. I don't particularly like the feel of them in my hand, but I can't discount their vast service record and absolutely ridiculous ability to take a beating and keep on shooting. And I wouldn't hesitate to rely on one to save my life if I had done some proper training and was comfortable with it.

Also, he loves his Sig SP2022, which last time I checked is also a polymer framed gun... Now, I have never handled any polymer Sig. So I can't say if it has the feeling of a squirt gun like Glocks, so just sayin...

I try not to hate, but when considering a handgun I do take into account what I know of the manufacturer and history of the line of guns. I also take into account what feels good in my hands. I stay away from Glocks because I don't want to spend money on something that doesn't feel right and hope I enjoy it. Certain handguns I stay away from because of articles that demonstrate that reliable performance is restricted to certain types of ammo. Certain semi-autos I'll stay away from because X company has had to replace magazines for Y agency on two seperate occasions, and yet I'd trust X company's revolvers. Lastly, and I don't think this point has been made, there are some who will not buy from certain companies because they bowed to political pressure.

I will also make the anecdote relating to the car maker battles. I went through the same thing growing up, and being a Mopar fan, I was always in the minority when the armchair racing would start. Most of the hate isn't really hate, at least I hope not. I prefer to look at it as just people taking pride in the brand(s) that they like best. Sure. Some people take it too far, but in the end I think most rational people realize that everything has pros and cons.

Individuality. If it wasn't for that, there would only be a single model/color of everything

Ruger p89 and the charter arms bulldog are some of my absolut favorite cheap handguns, ever. The bulldog is no python or Model 29 but its great for the money. Ive owned those along with pythons, Colt custom shop 1911s, etc. but I dont think Ill ever in my life own a glock.. Dont care too much for the grip angle or the way it feels in my hand.

On the many gun boards I read, much of the hate for certain guns is strictly someone repeating what they heard. For instance, not a handgun but in one of the other threads people were trashing the par 1, ak variant pump action.
Nobody had actually shot one. I own one and love it.

Guns, cars, sports teams... Some folks just are not happy unless they are talking down to someone else. In their mind they look better if you look worse.

I have some favorite guns and a few (including two major 'types' that have massive loyal followings) that I just flat out don't care for and would not bother to own.

But hey, each to his own. If you are happy with the one you have then more power to you.

Nothing wrong with a $300 dollar 38 snub nose revolver.

Fun, cheap, inexpensive to shoot, etc.

I am not a Sigma fan but I am a big S&W fan.

As far as knocking others for their choices, I sometimes wonder why people buy the most expensive guns, don't shoot them and then sell them because they realize that they have $2500 dollars in an expensive piece of male pseudo jewelry.

Men suffer from the same impulsivity that some women suffer from.

There is another not-so-malevolent side to it. Much of the time it's people either relating repeated personal experiences or a compilation of what they've read, heard, and observed. YOUR Sigma might be good, but they have a higher incidence of complaints than many other models. People may advise others to steer clear of guns they perceive to have a bad reputation not because they're being jerks but because they're trying to save the advisee trouble. Most of us want others, particularly newcomers, to have the best experience with their guns possible so we have more happy members among our ranks.

One more thing...

One more thing I would like to add to this...

Many things in life are cost/reward based.

If an S&W Sigma were on consignment at a local pawn shop and were on sale for $500-600 dollars, you might not even take a second look at it even if you were looking at other pistols that cost the same or more.

However, if the same pistol is priced at $350 dollars, then you are getting a good deal and the cost/reward ratio is in your favor because you get the purchase done with less cash withdrawn from your checking account.

Choices get swayed by cost/reward ratios.
