S&W SD40 Any Good?

I am thinking of getting an S&W SD40. I see them pop up at Sportmans's for less than $400 a couple of times a month. I've already got some .40 S&W rounds so I wouldn't have to go on an ammo hunt for it.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

It’s a POS unless you get an Apex trigger.

I was surprised at some of the prices in the MP.

If you wait out the scamdemic, you can probably get it at MSRP with the upgrades here.

I had one in 9mm and had no issues with it, sold it to a friend who wanted a CC pistol.

I wouldn’t be opposed to buying one. Just that I bought Glocks instead when they weren’t much more. I hear the apex trigger makes them pretty good pistols.

They have bad reputation as semi finished products that were rushed to the market. Trigger is the primary complaint. I haven't fired one so take this with a grain of salt.

I have an SD9VE (9mm) and I love it for what it is. The trigger pull from the factory is heavy and does not have a good wall, but if you practice with it, there's no reason it won't perform. I got mine for $200+ less than a G19 and think it was a great buy.

I'm not a crackshot, but I get great groups with this pistol.

Considering the market right now, if you want a .40 and this is on your radar, you won't regret it as long as you're willing to put some time behind the trigger to get used to the pull.

So much crying over the Sigma trigger - it’s like you soft girly boys have never shot a revolver double action before?! Look, it’s not gonna be a 5.5 lb sponge trigger like a Glock, it’s got an 8 lb DA style trigger - they are a lot of fun for the money, and considering the design is nearly as old as the Glock, it is leaps and bounds better in the ergonomics department.

Not nearly as much aftermarket support and debates on ergonomics are moot. Better than no gun at all, but if there's no important metrics then why even ask.

Thank you for the advice everyone. I should also say that I have shot the SD9 and I did like that one. I shot well with it and was not troubled by the trigger weight with it.

"Good" is subjective. Ask better questions to get better answers. If you want something that goes click-bang, even a Hi-Point is "good". Ask the same question of any other pistol, you'll get answers from both ends and in-between. The SD series is practically an economy version of their M&P 1.0. As such, corners are cut to reduce production and retail cost. As long as you can accept that, find it ergonomically suitable and (most importantly) find it acceptably accurate with your existing skills... that's all that matters.

It is kind of a bad pistol. Not as bad as the pile of turds that is the G19, but its still not great

Mine is pretty ok-ish. The ergonomics really are better than a glock, but the trigger is a weird mushy pile of mashed potatoes with no real break or reset. It doesnt stack or anything, its just a weird mush. This is *with* the apex trigger.

The absolute bottom line is that the SD40/9 are extremely reliable, well made, ergonomic, and they are accurate. Yes, the trigger is bad, no that won't really prevent you from grouping well with it past defensive distances. Forget about the apex trigger and just get the spring kit for a few bucks, and call it good. Skip the striker spring, as it fails to set off CCI primers on occasion.

If that gun has Apex trigger then you need Apex trigger though. I had SD9VE with Apex trigger and never has problem with it, I benchmark SD9VE (Apex) and G-19 (Ghost disconnector) side by side, both perform about the same, SD9VE is $150 cheaper.

The SD is now about $450 cheaper than a g19.
