You're right that .45 is hard to find. But when you find it, it is closer to 50 cents a round than 75 cents. I just checked some of the online vendors and found two with it available:

Outdoor Marksman- Federal American Eagle 230 grain FMJ for $25 per box of 50 (50 cents a round).

Natchez Shooters' Supply - CCI Blazer aluminum case 230 grain FMJ for $22.99 per box of 50.

Or you can go to your local Walmart and camp out in the Sporting Goods department and hope they stock the ammo shelf at 4AM with some Winchester White Box 45, which will cost a lot less than the above.

For what it's worth, my XD45 has handled everything I've put in it without any problem other than one FTE (shooting Fiocchi rounds). If you can find reasonably priced 45 ACP ammo, you probably will be all right using it.
