Opinions? SW 99

I'm looking at a S&W99 (which is supposedly the Walther copy) in 40 S&W at a local shop. I need another 40 for Wifezilla that isn't DAO or a Glock. This thing is DA/SA with a decocker, etc and from what I understand S&W isn't listing them any longer.

Any opinions/information of note on these guns?

Same as the walther gun, with a s&w label.

I would suggest letting Wifezilla select her own pistol...what you think may be perfect may be different than her opinion. amhik

I've shot the 99 in 9mm and .40, the .40 was quite honestly kind of painful to shoot. I'd have your wife look at some of the other options out there if she's set on a polymer framed .40 pistol.

Wifezilla shot a single stack 1911 for years so the 40 isn't to much for her.

Normally I always tell people to let their spouses pick their own guns but all three guns that Wifezilla has were guns that I brought home for myself.

My gf likes my P99 in 9mm the best out of all my pistols. More than my 22LR pistols. She says its the most comfortable fit in her hand (using the smallest back strap). She's got small hands and those interchangeable back straps are great for her. Great for me too because I can switch to the large ones when she's not shooting it.

The 40 s a different animal from the 9. It is much snappier. Honestly, I don't think she will like the 40 but then again, its only b/c I don't. Love 1911s and love the P99 in 9. Couldn't (and tried) to like the P99 in 40.

I've found the quality of the S&W to be a bit lacking compared to the Walther. I shot the .40 SW99 and then a friend's .40 P99 and thought the P99 just felt a bit more sophisticated and solid for some reason. Not the knock the SW99, it's a good shooter, but I suppose it's just one of those personal things; not something that I could really quantify and give you a point by point comparison, but more of a "something just feels different here" kind of thing.

That being said, both of them are pretty snappy (which would be expected for any .40); the polymer frame is light, which increases this snappyness compared to, say, a P226 in .40. The anti-stress trigger is actually quite a nifty thing, and both the SA and DA pulls are even and pretty crisp. I bought a P99 in DAO last week and am still kind of figuring it out, but I think once I figure out where the break is and whatnot, it'll be a great gun (well, it is a great gun, I'm just not a terribly good shooter with it yet, lol).

Not to sound like a Walther snob but the SW is not on par with the Walther. Hell Smith and Wesson can't even make the frame right Walther has to do it for them on their SW99.

Even though it says S&W on the slide of a P-99 that's because they are the importer only and thats the regs for doing so.

Years ago a small batch of Walther's in 40 cal, the slide and frame where made by S&W, no german proof marks and people were pissed they payed that much for a gun that wasn't built like a swiss watch.

The forty is snappier in either model, the gun was designed for 9mm orginially and that's what I have. One of the best kept secrets out their. I'll never sale mine.

Yeah the DA/SA which they now call the AS trigger isn't imported as much anymore, they want to push the QA glock like trigger on us and LEO's.

Do yourelf a favor and pay the few extra bucks and get the Walther.

About a year ago our department dumped the SW99 for G22's. Reliability was terrible.

i think she will like it i have a SW990L in 40 an both my gf and my friends wife loved it over my friends glock 19 so i dont know its up to the person the grip is actually good for smaller hands. And not to snappy u might wanna try out a 9mm and 40 to make sure.

Also i found that some Hollow Points can be picky with the S&W990L depending on brand never had problems with federal and winchester ranger but did have it happen twice out of say 200 rounds a FTF with WWB HP. FMJ never had a problem and reloads as well so just a heads up

Our department did the same thing a few years back. They were constantly breaking and malfunctioning (at least when compared to other Austrian brands that start with G). hmmmm....

I would really hesitate to put my faith in any new s&w auto as a def gun any time soon..Sigma...PPK...Performance center guns..ALL have had major issues/ recalls in the last few years.

A heavy steel framed 1911 is a totally different animal compared to the snappy recoil of a .40 from a lightweight polymer framed pistol.

I asked a couple of M.P.D. guys and they hated them, at least they can get decent mags. A dude from work has one and he can't get any mags that won't spill it's gut at will. He called S&W about it.........they told him to move

I've never had any issues with my Kool-Aid cups(Glocks)
