    High Power barrel tab

I posted this on the Semi Auto rifle forum accidentally, so I will try this where it should be!

My FEG High Power clone needed a replacement barrel so I picked one up from Ebay, a Turkish Tislis High Power clone barrel.

The FEG barrel and a Browning High Power barrel both have a tab at the breech end that fits into a matching slot on the slide breech face. The Tislis barrel doesn't, presumably for ease of manufacture.

The Tislis barrel dropped into the FEG slide and hand feeds dummy rounds with no issue.

Is the tab another lock point or an indexing tab when the barrel locks up? I see that Brownells sells replacement HP barrels that also lack the tab.

Sometime around 2000 Browning eliminated that barrel hood extension, and some folks say the guns were not as accurate without them. Some folks say they notice no difference. Some folks say it was only there to plug a square hole in the slide that had to be made when machining the breech face.

curious why it needed a new barrel... also curious as to how much the new barrel cost, I mean I could just check ebay for myself but I am lazy. besides I now have to go pull my FEG HP clone out of the safe to see if I have the little nub on the barrel

The FEG barrel is badly pitted. It is presumably an Iraq issue weapon with typical poor maintenance. It has fake FN markings on the slide that are attributed to export to Iraq from what I've read.

After I got the barrel from Ebay I saw that GPC has a boatload of FEG high power parts including new barrels. I would have gotten one of those instead but this one seems to fit fine. GPC wants $75 for their new FEG barrels which should drop into your FEG or any FN spec metric pistol. I put the pitted barrel in my Mk3 and the MK3 barrel in the FEG and they both worked fine.

Interesting stuff. Allot of CZ 75 variant barrels have a similar barrel hood extension.

I took the FEG to the range today. It functioned without a hitch with the Turk barrel in the Hungarian pistol. The first 10 rounds mostly strung vertically. The next 5 rounds didn't but were in a pattern and not in a group. After that the pistol settled down and while not a tack driver, put most of the shots into the black. A major problem were the tiny service sights. It was overcast but what light I had was directly behind me and made the front blade disappear on the black target. A dab of orange on the front sight will help a lot.

I'm surprised and pleased how well this pistol shoots for what it is. It has a better than usual trigger pull since I installed a lighter hammer spring and the accuracy is on par with what I've had from other 9mm service pistols in the past.
