I shot a beautiful six inch original Python today...

I have three old Pythons and one new Python. The double action trigger pull on the original pythons stack heavily and always feel heavier than what they are because of it. On the Smiths the pull is more even and you can easily tell when the cylinder locks up and that lets you know the hammer is about to fall and gives you much more control of your shots and almost makes it seem like a single action pull. The colt does not do this and it does make high precision shots more difficult. If you are rapid firing the even trigger pull on the Smith means that it is less likely that your sight picture will change with the pull of the trigger.

i still love those Colts their workmanship is very good, even the new one, but the Smiths are better guns.

I like my PC 627 better than my PC 686. Neither are custom but the N-frame feels better to me vs the L frame. Plus that 1 extra round just in case!

The most common sentiment about the Python is that it is one of the most beautiful handguns ever made. I don't generally hear people claiming that it is the best performing revolver ever made.

It's no big surprise a tuned 627 would feel better to shoot than a off-the-shelf random vintage Python. The action on my worked-on Model 19 will run circles around every Python I've ever seen. It didn't keep me from getting my own Python though. Art is in the eye of the beholder.

Rugers are very serviceable examples of field artillery that have great potential when done correctly. Some are very useful out of the box as utility guns, and hold up very well to a lot of shooting and hard use. If you want one that is customized, Bowen Classic Arms is what has worked for me. Hamilton Bowen transformed my “golf club” Super Redhawk into exactly what I wanted, and will soon do the same to one of their single actions.

One more thing. The Colts have tighter chambers. You can chamber 38 super rounds in some Smith Wesson chambers, but the Colts have tighter chamber and will not chamber a 38 Super at all. Also when I used to reload you could always tell when you had fired a 357 in a Colt it resized easier because it did not expand that much. Also if you did not fully resize the case it would not go in the Colt easily. I don't know if the new Colts also have tight chambers. I have not checked on my new Python. Maybe I will do it next time I take it out to shoot.
