    Makarov for HD gun.

So guys what do you think of the idea of using a Makarov as a home defense hand gun ? I pick up my E.german makarov in about 9 days and im thinking about using that as my primary home defense hand gun. What are you guys expirience with the decocker ? Is it 100% fail proof ? Have you guys heard of any instances where the decocker fires the weapon ? I know the CZ52's have a history of the gun firing off when being decocke'd . What about ammo ? I have a couple hundred rounds of makarov hollowpoints both boing 95g or 115g , what is the primary diffrence ? Which one would be more sutable ?

    Thanks.

The Makarov doesn't have a reputation of discharging due to the decocker, but you should never trust one - always point it in a safe direction when decocking.

I wouldn't consider it an ideal HD gun, mostly due to the caliber - it's a little light, though certainly servicable. Also, the mag capacity is limited to 8 rounds and the sights aren't the greatest.

I've got one in .380, and it's a great gun - my favorite .380 by a long shot. It's accurate, reliable, and comfortable with a Pearce grip. I prefer a 9mm or .357 for home defense, though.

If it's the best shooter you've got, it'll definitely do the job. I've got several guns that are more powerful but less reliable and/or less accurate, so I'd choose it over one of them. I also like the long, springy trigger, as that's important to me in a HD gun.

I used my Bulgarian Mak as an HD gun for several years. I liked how strong the DA trigger pull was, and its slim profile fit well in my hand (not as nicely as my CZ vz. 82, but still nice). I painted the front sight a bright color and I was in business.

I think 9 x 18 mm Makarov's a good SD/HD caliber; just the right balance of penetration vs. perceived recoil. The Mak's heavy, and with the right Wolff spring, it's very easy to handle one-handed (provided you're in single-action mode).

Only one thing bothered me about — the heel mag release. I got to the point where I was OK with it, but I would have hated to try it under stress.

If it's what you have, it's the best HD weapon at your disposal.
From Sacramento, Calif. My wife gave me six slots for weapons. As of 3/23/10, I'm thinking: CZ 75 BD in 9 mm, Glock 19, a FS2000, a Springfield M1A (Standard), Marlin 336 in .30-30, and a CZ 452 bolt-action .22-caliber rifle.

I think it's a good HD gun. A super shorty 870 on a tax stamp would be even better.

It's certainly better than no gun, but I'd want a handgun with a minimum of 9mm for home defense. Better yet, a full size .45. Better still... a full size .45 with an integrated rail for a weapon light.

Save the Makarov for the range and when we win Sykes.

Thats for the input guys. I have other rifles with easy access but I figure i need a nite stand gun. Since I turned 21 about a month and a half ago i dont have alot of handguns to choose from. What im using now is a .22 6 shot revolver lol , I have a tokarev but that ammo is way to hot to use inside the house too much overpenetration. When i drosed the makarov i drose'd a 38special taurus revolver as well , which would be great HD gun but that is gonna go in my parents room. Figure i need one for my room and the makarov is best handgun out of the lot.
