A few weeks ago I purchased this Dan Wesson Classic Commander from a well known auction company. Before bidding, I called and spoke to an associate about the 90-94% condition. He said said he had seen the gun, and it was in mint condition. Near perfect. That was a big relief for me as I wanted the gun, especially at the price I could get it for.
After receiving the gun, I noticed some rust on the slide. No big deal, I can take that off. Then rust on the interior of the gun. Patches of it everywhere. Behind the grips it looks pretty bad. They told me that wasn’t rust tho? Also, there was an idiot scratch on the frame. Not deep enough to be easily seen from all angles. But deep enough for me to notice the gun wasn’t in mint condition, as I was told. Before searching for more rust and issues I took it to the range to shoot. It shot amazing, it really was extremely accurate and had far less muzzle flip than I had anticipated. Still a bit annoyed that I bought the gun thinking it was mint. I decided to sleep on it a few nights before contacting the auction company. At which point, I did call.
I explained everything to them and was given the cold shoulder for a couple days. I then got in touch with a manager and she explained to me that all of the rust issues and scratches are consistent with the 90-94% rating. She mentioned that they do not take guns apart for auctions. Which I understand, as they sometimes auction off over 1000 guns in a single day. I then mentioned that a gentlemen I had spoken to prior told me it was mint. She looked into it and came back and told me the guy I was speaking to was brand new. Therefore, they will not be held liable for a simple mistake that the new employee made. I didn’t contest this too much because I didn’t want to get the guy in trouble. I did however send pictures and ask that they come up with something to help me out. Anything.
I wasn’t expecting much, but was hoping they’d give me enough of a discount to get some new sights, as the night sights were almost dim. They gave me two options. A refund of $100 and keep the gun, or a full refund of the gun. I slept on this as well and decided to send the gun back. The trigger was super loose, it needed sights and the finish was pitted in a few spots. I also didn’t know enough about rust to know if it could be a progressive problem.
In summary, the reason I’m not mentioning this auction company is because they went above and beyond to make things right. Also, I believe that I am 85% responsible for what happened, as I was buying a 13 year old 1911 sight unseen. Regardless of what some guy says about the gun, I should have known that I could be getting anything, at least on the inside. So if you are going to buy a used gun sight unseen, I recommend that its not something you plan on babying. But rather a work horse.
I lucked out on this one, but I think I’d rather have a black 1911, like a V-Bob.
They mentioned the discoloration on the grips is not rust. What could it be?
