another Glock question

Wife is working with a gal who wants to get a pistol for HD (no carry) and she's wanting the Glock 19X - I checked the prices of the X and the "normal" G19 and the X is about $40 more

was wondering why, outside of the Coyote color of the 19X, why would anyone pay the extra $s for 2 additional rounds - do you think that it's because the 17rd X mags fit flush with the grip base ?

dang - the G19 will accept any of the higher capacity mags (17, 19, 24, 31, 33) so "why" the G19X over the G19 ?

oops, I'm in Texas so capacity isn't a problem here, but the question remains

The X and 45 are designed more as a duty pistol. To have a full size grip with 17 rounds but a 19 slide to cut back on weight and to clear the holster sooner than a full size glock 17 slide.

This comes back to more people would rather have a glock made with a 19 size grip with a 17 slide.

Me personally I'd rather have a 19 over a 19x because it doesn't make sense to me unless it's as a duty weapon. And if I was going to get a glock with a full size grip, I'd get the 17 for the longer sight radius.

Mechanically/hardware-wise, the 19X comes with lanyard loop and two +2 mag extensions installed on 2 of the 3 magazines; of course, the color is different from the usual black-color, which some people prefer/like.

But I'm not the woman's salesperson and don't care what she buys.

A pistol or pistols with a similar appearance to the 19X was/were submitted to the U.S. military, but lost out in the competition (Army MHS competition). Glock's marketing released the 19X to the public anyway.

Remembering back a few decades ago, Beretta won a prior military competition with its M9 (a 92FS variant) handgun, yet SIG's P226 submission was generally selected by the Navy's SEAL teams, various local law enforcement departments, and other countries' military. I understand SEAL and other USSOCOM generally issues a G19(whatever gen) and the SIG P226s have been/are being phased out.

I suppose even though Glock lost the MHS competition it might still be good marketing to still release the handgun (or similarly looking handgun) for sale. I'm unaware of any multi-pistol contracts for the 19X but I suppose Glock will gladly sell the 19X to any prospective customer for a large quantity. I thought I heard rumors individual sales of the 19X were quite good but I've no knowledge at all of any sales numbers.

Personally, I tend to be with the OP and among my Glocks, I own a G19Gen5 and a G17Gen5 (among others), but didn't buy into the G45 or G19X as I already owned the 17 and 19 and just didn't have the need or desire. If I was in-charge of choosing between the G17, G19, G45 configurations, I'd submit it to a committee and choose one or a combination of the three.

Where & when I worked in LE, the G17 and G26 (gen4) were the only options and this is likely to stay that way for another 5 to 10 years before replacement of the department's handguns are once again considered.

The original FBI Gen 5 19 has that horrible cut out in the front of the trigger guard. My pinky lands right in the center of that hole. It's sharp and rips the hell out of my pinky during recoil. (The cut out can also impede speed reloads.)



If your wife's friend shot one of those, that could be the reason she wants a 19X - which doesn't have the cut out.

Glock later came out with G19 models with forward cocking serrations as well as an MOS version. Neither of these models have the magazine cut out. However, they do have the Gen 5 magazine well. Depending upon the width of the shooter's hand, the added width of the magazine well on a Gen 5 G19 (which is absent on the 19X) could be a negative for some shooters.

Finally, if your wife's friend likes the G19X, she should take a look at the G45. I have both. Besides the color, the biggest difference between the two is the addition of the magazine well to the G45. If she doesn't mind the black color of the G45, she can save herself a couple of bucks over the 19X.

I would recommend letting her buy what she wants for the reasons she wants it. Both handguns are excellent quality and it might come down to looks alone. No need to talk her out of it IMO.

I agree - they are both so similar there is no need to hem and haw over it. Just be happy we have a new female gun owner in the fold and be happy she is making a good selection. She's not debating Desert Eagle versus HiPoint C9, so this is already a win. Let her pick which Glock she wants.

I've got no influence over the decision the gal makes and won't talk to her further about her choice (thru my Wife), 'twas just a suggestion - saving $s was the intent as I know what her income is (and, as I suggested - she's a "she")

An AR15 for home defense, and a G19X makes little sense as the shorter barrel is for ease of carry.

But more importantly all of you should train with at least one of these institutions.
