S&W Model 19-4 CHP Commemorative Question

Would one of these revolvers have come from the factory in single action only?

I recently acquired one that works fine in single action,
but when you pull the trigger in double action, the cylinder spins
but the hammer doesn't cock or fall.

I’ve never heard of S&W altering their actions for SAO, but I would say someone has tinkered with it - doesn’t look worn enough for something to have broken.

I can tell you that it did not come from the factory with jeweled hammer and trigger.

OP i just checked mine and the stat sheet that came with it. No Jeweled trigger or hammer. Accessories are listed as: Red ramp front sight, white outline rear sight, target hammer and smooth combat-wide trigger. Also mine functions as a double or single action.

They likely did a "trigger job" when they jeweled the trigger and hammer. As part of that, I would expect your DA sear is missing.

I have a CHP commemorative 19-4 too. The trigger is wide and smooth. The hammer and trigger are case hardened, not jeweled.

The DA pull on my 19-4 is probably the best among my revolver collection. Part of it is the width of the trigger.

Just got back from the gunsmith and the DA sear had been removed.

Other than that and side plate screws being put it wrong, the gun is awesome.

The gunsmith also said it appears to be unfired.

One way of getting the gun into CA is to remove the DA sear and have it qualify as "single action only". Doesn't mean anything in Idaho, but maybe it traveled through the "used to be" Golden State that way.

FWIW, quite a few S&W commemorative revolvers, regardless of age, are C&R eligible and CA roster exempt - the CHP one is:

"Smith & Wesson, California Highway Patrol Commemorative model 19 revolver, cal. .357"

If you're looking for a 5" N frame in 44 caliber the S&W 544 "Texas Commemorative" is eligible and not too garish. Granted it's a 44.40 cartridge, but still a neat gun to have.

that engine turning was a thing back in the day I have a Ruger Blackhawk done the same way yuk I have a 14-4 in SAO from the factory with a letter it does the same as yours
