    Buying from Gunbroker.com

    Good morning,

I am looking at buying a 1903 Colt Hammerless .32 from Gunbroker.com. Since it is not on the current roster can I still buy it since it is over 50 years old and would be considered a curio/relic? I know that is has to go to a FFL but I was wondering on how this works since it is not on the roster.

Thanks for your help with this.

I have bought several C&R guns (over 50 years old) via Gunbroker. It can be done if seller is willing to ship to California and you have an FFL here willing to accept and process. Not all are and those that do will charge a processing fee. Your final hurdle is proving that the gun qualifies as C&R. That shouldn't be a problem for a 1903 Colt but for old versions of guns currently in production, you need to be ready with proof, such as an Internet or some other printout of serial numbers with years. I did that for a 1944-vintage Walther PP and a 1922 vintage S&W revolver. The most important element is a cooperative FFL on this end. If you have that, it's easy-peasy. You have the FFL email or fax its license to selling party, the gun is shipped, you do regular sales process on this end when it arrives and wait 10 days. Unlike PPT transactions, it will count as a sale from dealer and thus be subject to one-a-month rule.

Where are you located? Shootsocal in Fullerton has best price on transfers/dros. Find an ffl that will accept for treasonable price not $125 pluis dros ;like the bay area thieves
get. So you will have to pay transfer fees, dros fees, sale tax and shipping.

And then look into getting your 03FFL (Curio & Relic license) and a Certificate of Eligibility from the California DOJ.

With those two things you can skip the 10-day waiting period on C&R firearms and also exempts you from the 1 per 30 day rule for dealer transactions (C&R and modern firearms).

But you still have to find an FFL that knows how to process such tranfers.

Ace’s Pawn in West Covina will do Gunbroker C&R transfers.
Just got a couple of sweet Colt Detective Specials from the 50’s.
Ace’s helped a lot facilitating the transfers.

As stated above the key to this is a good FFL on both ends.

On the selling end you’ll need an FFL who will even deal with sending a gun to California and secondly will comply with California regulations. Sometimes not an easy thing to find.

On your end you’ll need a good FFL who is willing to import a gun from out of state. Most FFL‘s in my area are so busy they don’t even have time to DROS out-of-state transactions and if they do they’re charging an arm and a leg for it

Best of luck with it, I’ve done it a few times in the past, but not sure I do it these days unless it was a gun I really had to have
