    Another Glock P80

Back in the day I had a couple of Gen1 G17's off and on, but for some reason or the other I traded them off. Anyway, when they announced the release of the P80, I decided to get one if I could find one. As I mentioned in another thread, I don't know why I wanted one of these, but I knew that I had to have one if I could.

After a couple of weeks of looking, I was finally able to locate one at Cabelas. They had just put it out earlier this morning and I guess I was the first to see it.

It even worked out a little better for me because I asked if they could price match other stores and they knocked 5% off, so it came to $646 + tax, which coincidentally was right at the upper limit of what I was willing to pay for one.

Anyway, I know that others have posted pics of theirs, so I won't do an in depth pictorial, but here are a few pictures I took right after I got it home:

These are kind of up there with commemorative Colts/1911's. Yes?

It certainly is a testament to the staying power of the revolutionary design.

I would say it is similar. So far it is supposed to be a limited run (5000) for Lipsey's, but it is anybody's guess as to whether they decide to continue production after they finish the initial run.

Out of curiosity, I dug out my Gen3 G17 and there are some definite differences between it and the P80:

Notice that it has the Gen1 style single pin frame.

And the extractor is the earlier flat style.

The rear of the grip area doesn't have the hole.

And the barrels are marked differently.

Another thing is that while handling them side by side, I thought the P80 felt lighter, so I weighed them and sure enough the P80 was 3 grams lighter. Now I know I am not good enough to feel that small a difference, so I attribute it to the way the different grip feels in my hand.

Maybe the weight difference is the lack of the silly rail.

I like the wraparound texture of the Gen 1 grip.

Looking at my Gen 2 G17, the grip texture is the only real difference I see, except that the P80(Gen 1) is also missing the round molding mark at the corner of the left side trigger guard. It is there on my Gen 2.
