Look'n for really good 1911 'smith.

My Series 80 1911 has a poor slide to frame fit and I'd like to have a really competent gunsmith tighten it up for me. Who can you recommend?

        John Jardine.

The way some gunshop clerks spout off, you'd think that they invented gunpowder and the repeating rifle, and sat on the Supreme Court as well.

Achieve the ultimate in accuracy by ensuring the tightest slide-to-frame fit available. Acc-U-Railed guns won't shoot loose like those tightened by peening or squeezing.

I prefer the above to molesting the frame rails with a hammer and torch.

With very little argument I'd say one of, but I'd argue a lot if you said the... There are too many great smiths...

The problem is a one-off work like this will be hard to get someone to do. The good smiths are booked to eternity.

+1 on that. It's very popular in the IPSC/USPSA scene. Some guns that had 50K rounds through them requiring new barrels only and the slide to frame fit of the Acc-u-rail is still tight or just needing one size up on the actual rods. Nothing else compares how smooth the slide glides on the rails.

Acc-u-rail is an interesting concept I'd not heard of before. I'm going to look into that.

Gotta ask...does your handle have any significance to the CA prison systems inmate classification codes?

Yes. I have spent a significant amount of my life in prison.

Any competent Smith can tighten your slide to frame fit. My suggestion to you would be to to worry about barrel and bushing fit to improve accuracy. Having someone pound on my frame and slide with a hammer isn't really worth the minute accuracy improvement you get for the wear and tear on your pistol. I have 2 series 80's and one has a great slide to frame fit the other so so. The loose gun by far outshoots the other because the barrel and bushing are tighter.
