Yardwork Gun

I got to thinking about the best carry gun option when puttering around the yard, garage, etc.

For me, I've gravitated toward the S&W 340PD with a CT laser grip for pocket carry while working in the yard, garage, or handling the honey-do house chores. Granted, this is in a suburban neighborhood with a fairly low threat environment.

Pros: Lightweight, simple to operate, easily pocketable and loaded with .38+p's. Cons: 5 rounds only, stout recoil.

What say you? Do you carry when working around the house and yard? If so, what do you carry and how?

Personally, I would like a revolver that shoots 410 shot shells so I can take out any rattlesnakes I come across.

Too bad Ca has decided these are “short barreled shotguns”

Even if they weren't, you still have a slew of firearm discharge laws at every level of government (city, county, state).

Ruger LCP or Springfield XD9 SC. Long guns are not far.

Just don't go into any area that may be considered 'public', such as an un-fenced front yard, unless you have a valid CCW permit.

I realize that anything can happen but I've lived here for twenty-two years and am not aware of any incidents in my neighborhood in that time.

Yup, everyone that's been killed in a similar situation would say that. If they weren't dead.

There was an interesting episode of Handguns and Defense or whatever it's called, on one of the outdoor channels. The scenario was a guy working in his garage, a passerby stopped to ask about his car, friendly yak yak, and it turns unfriendly. Bottom line the guy ran out of bullets before he gets killed. 5 ain't enough. Maybe you can find a replay on their website or youtube.

I was at a KSG demo along with the my county sheriff and a number of his folks, and a direct sales guy from KT. It started and ended as a pos jam-o-matic, whether shot by the KT guy or anyone else. In summary, a more than pathetic disaster. The county went with 870's.

Idaho passed a law that obvious property lines define private areas, fenced or not. Brandishing complaints are tossed by the DA if it's a rural resident on their property, especially at night.


This is a constitutional carry state, and it's assumed that more or less all folks are carrying.
