I need a hand gun refinished

[ffosty]

I have an old handgun (Star 9MM) that I would like to get stripped and re-blued. I'm in the San Diego area. Any suggestions?

Try Robar's NP -3 coating on Robar.com. They did a great job on my H&K 45...

You can refinish it yourself for nominal cost. Some of the finishes people are suggesting are ridiculously expensive and will end up costing you the same or more than you paid for that gun (Star B/BM/BKM 9mm ~$200).

Brownells carries a number of finishing products for firearms including these:

I've used several different ones in the past including Gun-Kote with excellent results. It's best to bead blast the surfaces first and then use a good degreaser before attempting any of these coatings.

If you have to ship the gun be refinished you will have to ship it overnight which will run you about $100 for shipping both ways. This company is in Orange . http://www.techplate.com/ It's a drive from San Diego but you can save on shipping. This place is in Moreno Valley. http://www.armoryairbrush.com/BLACK.html They do durocoat. As for doing guns at home. I have used Brownell's teflon moly oven bake finish with good success. You bead blast everything, then you have to make sure the parts are absolutely clean. If I remember right I used brake cleaner. Then you spray the finish on with an airbrush. Walmart use to sell airbrush kits in the toy section that came with a can of air. If you have a compressor just get an airbrush at harbor freight. Some of the finishes come in an aerosol can but that doesn't work as well as an airbrush. The cans tend to spatter. Mark

Agree 100%.... Do it yourself! I have seen many excellent do-it-yourself jobs by others.

How much do you LOVE your Star 9mm? Adding the cost of a professional finish job will make it the most expensive Star 9mm ever. Return on investment on that is just dumb.

Actually, refinishing generally diminishes value on any firearm.

I have a couple of old Smiths that were factory refinished, but other than that I never refinish any firearm.

To the Op - I'd leave your Star as-is and enjoy shooting it.

It's a Star and he probably uses it for home/self defense. If it was a collectible Colt or Smith then refinishing it would be out of the question. If you're planning of keeping it and want to have a tough finish instead of the bake on DIY stuff, bring it to Techplate the hardchrome is hard to beat.

The star 9mm is worthless. I bought it in 1974 for $75.00, it was my first hand gun. I now have 35 hand guns and don't NEED it for anything except the sentimental value. As for the return on investment I agree its dumb on the investment side of things but like I said its sentimental.

I really appreciate all the input and will most likely go with the shop in Moreno valley as I have family there and spend a lot of time in that area.
