I have a Springfield 1911 that I bought around 1995. I want to have the grip safety changed out. Is my Springfield a Series 80?

All of Springfield Armory's 1911's are based on the Series 70 guns. You can use either a Series 70 or Series 80 grip safety in them.Comment

Thanks guys! My wife actually bought me the grip safety years ago and it was labeled "Series 80". I was ready to take it to the gunsmith, but didn't know if I had the right part or not... Lookis like Series 80 grip safety will work then. Thanks!Comment

Mines is pre ILS I think....Originally posted by rst1911Joel,
All SPRINGFIELD ARMORY 1911 doesn't have a firing pin block which is a common feature of a series 80 1911 pistol....what they used instead is their propriety ILS safety.

My 9mm Springfield has the ILS though.Comment

the ils does not replace the series 80 firing pin safety, the ils is only a internal gun lock.Originally posted by rst1911Joel,

Keep in mind that a Springfield uses a .220 radius on the grip safety tangs. If you bought a "typical" one with a .250 radius, the frame would have to be welded up to blend the underside of the grip safety.
Ed Brown and Wilson high grip beavertails use a .250 radius which is the radius on just about every 1911..... except Springfields.Comment

The ILS is NOT the way Springfield gets around the drop safety requirement and the series 80 design. The way they get around it is by having a thinner, lighter firing pin that won't set off a primer if the gun is dropped barrel first or in any other direction. A standard 1911 firing pin will not fit in a Springfield 1911.Originally posted by rst1911Joel,
