    Help finding out gun's value

Hi there, I am new to the form and was wondering if I could get some opinions on the value of my grandfather's S&W .357 model 27-2. I have never fired it, my mother was afraid of it, and unfortunately I never had the chance to meet him. I have no intention of selling it, as its all I have of his, but would like to know the value.

    Thanks for the help!

Looks to be in very nice condition, and the 4" 27-2 is quite desirable. Id say $1000-$1200 maybe a little more in California.

Check out the current Gunbroker listings and follow/bookmark a few to track the going price. Best guess is $1-1.5k but that is without knowing the final sales price.

I have a 5" Model 27-2 in excellent condition that I've always assumed was in the $1000 to $1200 range. OP has the presentation box with tools that should add to the value. I've seen them selling from $75 to $250.

It might be a 5". The 5" are definitely worth a bit more.

                I’m betting it is a 5”.

$1000-$1500 is a good rough estimate if you are just curious and not looking to sell. Probably on the higher end of that scale based on the good looking condition and the accessories. You may get additional opinions in the C&R subforum.

There are variables that you cannot tell from just pictures. Is the ejector rod straight? What does the cylinder gap measure? How much play is in the cylinder - does it rattle or is it shaky? Is rust present or is there chips in the metal finish? What is the condition of the grips? Pictures are just pictures. One should handle and inspect the revolver. If this particular revolver were to pass inspection and depending when and where it would be sold, the value could range between $700-$1300. Maybe a bit less in some areas and maybe a bit more in others. For what it's worth, these are desirable revolvers, but not rare at all. Good luck with whatever decision you make.

If it checks out and there's no surprises not seen in the pics...closer to the $1500 mark. The case should be in good condition as well, and having the original paperwork is a plus. Values can be volatile though. I have a -2. It's a great piece. Although not classified as "rare", they definitely are not a dime a dozen. Especially complete, as you appear to have. I encourage you to research your specific model, as well as the manufacturer changes associated with each dash. Welcome to the "pinned and recessed" club.
