    jamed up xd9

hi, hoping this is the right section to post in.
went shooting today and shot some reloads (not mine) and after 30-40 i had one somehow jam in a way that not allowing me to pull the slide back to eject it. never had this happen with this or any other gun. put that one away and started shooting my EMP 9 and same thing. i was able to rack it a few times and fire that round off but my XD is still stuck.
i was able to pull the slide back just enough to remove the striker locking plate, spring, guide and indicator. i then knocked out the roll pin that holds the striker in but was not able to get the striker out.
i'm thinking it might be an issue with the recoil spring assembly but not sure. the round is chambered and does not seem to be causing the issue. i can also pull the trigger back but it will not fire.

    any ideas?
    thank you

Sounds like the reloads are the obvious problem. Having owned both a springfield XD9 and a springfield 1911, I have never had one jam. Also, from the malfunction I’ve heard of, its very rare to happen on an XD, and not likely to happen in this way on the EMP. Anytime you run into issues, its always best to go through a list of troubleshooting.

    1. Is the gun properly cleaned and lubed.
    2. Are you gripping it properly.
    3. Is the magazine seated correctly, try different mags.
    4. Try different ammo.

I stress this because you had the same problem with the same ammo in two guns that rarely have this issue, let alone at the same exact time.

thanks for the reply. should have mentioned that i'm not able to do anything with it until i can fix the jam. thats what i needed help with.
i only use factory mags. i use a mix of reloads and factory ammo and have never had any problem with any of my SA pistols until now.

Sounds like the reload issue. Oversized casing. Try gripping the gun with ALL five fingers. Use a corner of a table to push the slide back.

I had that happen with a certain brand of JHP reloads, the bullet profile was causing a failure to go into battery, I simply hit the back of the slide with my palm to close the slide and continued firing.

This is one of the reasons not to use non factory ammo for Defense ammo

I had this happen once with an xd40 shooting aluminum cased ammo. It was a booger to clear but using the edge of the table and tapping the top of the barrel hood down cleared the problem. It did take a while though. I can’t say for sure if it was the ammo or not but that was the last time I’ve used something other than brass cased ammo (pistol).

This was probably about a 1000 rounds ago and I’ve never had the issue again.

most experienced shooters do not recommend shooting another man's reloads

I reload and would not use reloads not made by me

                  Try this
Grab the top of the slide firmly while using your shooting hand more of less push with that hand on the grip whole pulling back on the slide almost smack it with tour grip hand

Main reason why gun companies advice not using reloads and remanufactured ammo. Most companies will actually void the warranty is mentioned ammo are used.

Not that difficult to clear an empty/spent brass.

To be clear: Is it jammed with an empty brass stuck in the chamber?
Meaning, you shot a round and the gun did not cycle to extract the spent shell? If YES,

Drop the magazine. Now that gun should be unloaded with a spent/shot/not live brass in chamber.

DROP a wooden or Delrin Dowel in the barrel and give it a sharp tap at the exposed end of the dowel. That should push the slide back while extracting that bulged brass from tha chamber.

Edit: Be mindful of your guns operating mechanism. If it requires the grip safety to be depressed to rack the slide, make sure you do that before banging on that dowel.

thanks for all the replies guys.

first 2 things i tried right away was striking the barrel end and using a rod. nether worked and i gave it quite a few good hits. also, its a live round in there not a spent casing.
got dark yesterday but i'll get back out there today and try again.
dont know if it matters but with the slide fully forward, the end of the guide rod sticks out about 1/8" past the barrel, supposed to be flush.

on the Springfield XD9 the guide rod is Its suppossed to be like that, its a feature called the stand off device. So if you press the muzzel into your target the guide rod hits the target and not the slide. If the slide hit the target the slide could open up so you cant make a contact shot.

it should fire the live round as is

I have an XD9 that I bought NIB and I've put about 1000 rounds through, and I had a friend comment at the range that when the gun is fully assembled, the guide rod extends about 1/8 inch forward of being quite flush with the muzzle. Having never really examined another XD, I don't know if this...

One of my coworkers had a live round that had a bulge in the brass get stuck in his Sig P226 while qualifiying. It jammed far enough into the chamber to lock the slide up but wasn’t completely in battery.

We ended up clearing the gun by lining the edge of the metal sand barrel we use to clear weapons with electrical tape so the finish of the gun wouldn’t be scratched, putting the rim of the barrel against the slide above the barrel, and leaning into the gun. It finally extracted the round.

And these were factory Winchester rounds so it could happen with new ammo too.
