This one said the diameter was .625 but it supposedly fit through the slide

Finding something less than .575 may be impossible.

You could look at a low profile AR thread protector and cut it to length, like this one which is even thinner (.610) than the ACW linked above

Or contact that seller and see if they have one that low profile for pistols. He claims to make them on a CNC lathe so he may be able to crank one out custom for you.

Update. Apparently after the weeks of intermittent searching turning up nothing, I found a somewhat random website that sells identical ones to the discontinued ones in two different lengths. Ordered both and will cross my fingers!

Persistence pays off. I hope it works out.

Late to the game but depending how much the thread protectors run, you instead just buy another, non-threaded long barrel if that's the look you like.

Maybe you can bugger up the threads on the thread protector enough to get it on there. You're going to have to weld it anyway.

Did I miss something? I didn't see an explanation on why it didn't work (though I assumed it didn't fit through the slide opening.)

If I'm correct, take it to a local machine shop and have them turn it down for you. Shouldn't cost a whole lot, I'd think.

                          Get a Glock 34 barrel.

if I’m ever out of state and wanna screw around with cans or brakes I can just hit it with a torch and remove the protector.
That's not actually legal in CA as it does not meet ANY definition of perm attached if you can remove it without damaging the barrel.
What you should do is get a Glock 34 barrel for use in CA and then just keep the threaded barrel for when you are out of state with your WISH fuel filters and switch.
