    Single-Action exemption removed?

Hey guys, I just chatted with Charter Arms and they have a revolver I want but it's not on CA roster, surprise! The tech told me just to order it and have my dealer remove the double action pin to make it exempt. He said it was super easy. So I called me vendor and he said that the "single-action exemption has been gone for 3 years." Is that true? This CA roster is BS...hoping some changes get made soon.

Not true. Find a new FFL. Single action exemption is alive and well. How in the world does he think all these single action revolvers are available on store shelves in Ca?!? Because they are not on the roster. Rugers, Colts, Cimarrons etc.

He is thinking of the single shot exemption, which is also still alive but can no longer be used for formerly-semi-auto pistols.

The revolver barrel has to be 3" or more, and the overall length has to be at least 7.5"

Tell us where you are, we can refer you to a FFL.

Yeah I called Dom's Outdoor in Livermore. I want the 4.2" barrel version of Charter Arms Pitbull 9mm. Maybe I should refer him to this thread? Or order from another vendor, Guns n Fishing.

IIRC Guns n Fishing is FUBAR, they have a bad rep here. If J&R is still around you might check with them.

I agree, been there a few times and sounds like the kids working there don't give a **** or want to be helpful at all. It sucks because it's the closest shop. I'll call J&R. thnx

Chances are the vendor that told you the single-action revolver exemption went away, just said that because they did not want to deal with making the Charter Arms Pitbull into a single-action and transfer it under the single-action revolver exemption.

              Penal Code 32100
              (a) Article 4 (commencing with Section 31900) and Article 5 (commencing with Section 32000) shall not apply to a single-action revolver that has at least a five-cartridge capacity with a barrel length of not less than three inches, and meets any of the following specifications:
              (1) Was originally manufactured prior to 1900 and is a curio or relic, as defined in Section 478.11 of Title 27 of the Code of Federal Regulations.
              (2) Has an overall length measured parallel to the barrel of at least seven and one-half inches when the handle, frame or receiver, and barrel are assembled.
              (3) Has an overall length measured parallel to the barrel of at least seven and one-half inches when the handle, frame or receiver, and barrel are assembled and that is currently approved for importation into the United States pursuant to the provisions of paragraph (3) of subsection (d) of Section 925 of Title 18 of the United States Code.

Last I heard they were Antifa supporters at GFOS. You could also use UG Imports or Rob Blank (RMB Enterprises) but you'd have to drive a little bit towards the bay.

I have bought a bunch of guns at Dom's. They are typically efficient with the process, but I don't think they are really a gunsmith type of shop. My guess is they don't want to work on someone's brand new revolver.

Is it legal to put it back to double action once you bring it home? Or is it forever a single action?

It is currently CA legal to modify a double-action revolver into a single-action revolver and modify a single-action revolver into a double-action revolver.

CA DOJ BOF stance on modifying handguns only applies to dimensionally compliant bolt-action single-shot pistols and dimensionally compliant break-open single-shot pistols.
^It does not apply to revolvers, manually operated repeating pistols, and semi-auto pistols.

                            Sounds good.
You will find that building a good relationship with a FFL goes a long way. They will often take the time to order firearms that they might not otherwise stock, do an occasional PPT, and have other insight to share that non-regular customers may not hear about. I have one that I've been using for some time now; every Christmas I take care of all the employees, and when things have been crazy busy, I'll pick up a case of beverages for the whole crew. Sometimes I drop by when I'm in town with some treats, say hello, and let them keep working.
                            Stuff like that helps.

Can the FFL here modify it? Or does it need to be done out of state?
