Single shot AR pistol conversion

Im very interested in the CA7 however Ive been told some FFLs can manufacture single shot pistols for quite a few bucks less. Is it feasible to purchase a single shot and convert it into a repeater since i only have >10 round mags and would like to retain the original mag release when shooting semi out of state

short answer: no it is not legal to convert a single shot. It must stay a single shot while in CA.

And to follow up on instaramen and plumbum's reply, in case you get further confused, CA7 is not a single shot, it is actually on CA's roster of safe handguns, and is registered as a bolt-action repeater.

There's a literal typhoon of discussion regarding single shot and CA7's bolt action out there, so probably better to search for those than watch your thread devolve into the same arguments rehashed all over again. You're not gonna like how ugly it can get, haha....

From what I saw, way more than buying a CA7 and converting that. I had seen lowers for $1k, complete pistols for over $2k. Obviously some may be higher, some lower. Think you'd be very lucky to find anything reasonable. Very similar situation to off-roster pistols.

Don't cheap out. Just buy a registered AR pistol that is registered semi-auto. You'll thank yourself later.

repeating = has a magazine capacity
single-shot = does not have a magazine capacity, cartridges are loaded/unloaded directly from the firearm's chamber

If it is made as a dimensionally compliant bolt-action single-shot pistol or dimensionally complaint break-open single-shot pistol, then it is illegal to make it into a manually operated (bolt-action) repeating pistol or semi-auto pistol with a fixed magazine. CA DOJ BOF equates modifying SSE2 pistols into another configuration the same as making an illegal usafe handgun.

If it's a manually operated repeating pistol (Franklin Armory CA7), then it already has a standard magazine release and it can legally use large capacity magazines.

If it's a semi-auto pistol with a fixed magazine, then the magazine capacity is limited to 10 rounds.
This is because a semi-auto pistol with a fixed magazine of 11+ rounds is an assault weapon. [PC 30515(a)(5)]

Also...
Although it is legal to take your large capacity magazine out-of-state, it is illegal to bring those large capacity magazines back to CA [PC 32310(a)].
Legally, they must be made into permanently modified 10 round magazines before being brought back to CA.
