For metal on metal contact rail to slide. Which is better to use oil or grease? In particular this will be for hand fit 1911s/2011s of that nature......tell me your experience and knowledge of this type of metal on metal slide contact.

Why grease over oil or vice versa?

1911/2011 pistols with a tighter frame rail to slide fit requires stuff that stays in place. While I normally use Mobile 1 full synthetic, I have had very good luck with ALG Go Juice, which is a 0000 light grease. I have tried Jardine grease, which is what I run on most 1911s, but my 9mm pistols tend to prefer lighter lubes.

I like Militec 1. You can even wipe it off so you don’t have any disable lube and it works great. And a little goes a loooooong way.

Grease... I use Lucas Gun Grease. It looks and smells like the Marine trailer axel grease to me Which makes it perfect for use on firearms or heat resistance is important as well as the ability to protect against moisture.

I tend to over lube my guns. Works for me but there are times when it has bitten me. Had to leave my gun in the trunk of my car and it got cold. When I took the gun out it barely cycled and was stiff all over. Since then I lube the way my department lubes it's guns.

All parts are cleaned and wiped with an oiled cloth and reassembled. The slide is then oiled (using CLP) with four very tiny drops one at each corner of the rails. Rack it a few times and wipe off the excess.

I've tried greases before and found they can slow the slide velocity down enough to cause failures to feed, but was probably due to tighter fitted parts and too much grease. Whatever you decide to use, just remember to test it out thoroughly.

I started off with Shooters Choice FP-10 with my Springfield Loaded 1911 in stainless. Perused more on these web pages and various YT videos and tried Jardine's gun grease, Ballistol, Break Free CLP and Windex (jk). Always came back around to using FP-10.

I like it cuz it's easy to use, it doesn't smell like bad licorice (Ballistol) and above all, it works.

I’ve had great results with the ALG lubes. While the standard “go juice” is excellent, Their 0000 very thin grease has been my go to for a few years now (mostly on AR platforms). Definitely stays where you put it.
