Colt M1911A1 Identification

I have a friend who has a Colt M1911A1 US army issue no 188#### where can I find him some more information about this gun? Like when it was made what unit it was issued to and so on?

Colt M1911A1 Identification

The weapon was mfg in 1944 by Ithaca. As far as who it was issued to I think you would need to research with the military ( good luck ). I do not know of a data base on line,maybe another calgunner does. John johnsgunsmithing@live.com
