    9mm luger wheel guns

I've given thought to what might be needed in a worse case scenario. 9mm luger is the most available round out there. But, as time moves along the danger increases that semi-automatics will be banned. What to do? And then I see a Ruger revolver on sale. It shoots the luger round, but needs moonclips. I can live with that. But shooting some reloads purchased some time ago at a range I use there were problems. Apparently the gun was picky on the dimensions of the bullet, because new ammo worked just fine. Then I see the Charter Arms wheel gun that has a system that doesn't require moon clips. Cool! Will have it in hand soon. Curious if it also is picky regarding ammo dimensions.

Bullet or "crimp jump" is a real thing with 9mm in revolvers. Make sure whatever ammo you're running isnt going to do it. Its the reason I still dont own a 9mm revolver.

First, my 9mm Ruger LCR specifically says it can be fired without moon clips. The moonclips make ejection easier, but they are not required.

Crimp jump is when the projectiles loaded in the cases of the unfired rounds in the cylinder creep forward during firing. Small, lightweight revolvers are more prone to this because they do not soak up as much recoil.

9mm rounds are more prone to it because they do not have much if any case crimp on the projectile, as most are loaded for semi auto handguns where it is not as important.

So when the bullets start creeping forward out of their cases, they can lock up a revolver if they creep out past the cylinder face, because they will keep the cylinder from turning.

Some brands of 9mm ammo are more prone to it than others. Somewhere there is a list but I can’t find it.

If you handload, of course, you can crimp your 9mm just a bit tighter for the revolver. And you don't need to invest a lot just to reload that cartridge if you're new to reloading.

Good point. I just need to be careful with the stuff I got from my range until I reload it. Still good for all my semi-autos though.

There’s is no happier reloading than reloading for a revolver shooting auto cartridges on moon clips :-)

Blah, blah, blah, I shoot both factory ammo and reloads in my S&W 929 race gun revo, and never have any issues. I'll shoot 7 of the 8 rounds, then measure the last one.

Every once in a while I'll get ten thousandths of an inch of creep. No big deal. They still go BANG !!

If you've ever used a kinetic bullet puller, that's bullet creep.

Perhaps apples to oranges, or maybe really big apples compared to smaller lighter ones, but I have a bunch of 45 ACP revolvers and never had a problem with cheap 230 hardball moving forward. Granted they'd have a long way to go before tying up the cylinder - probably completely out of the case. But I've fired 4 or 5 rounds and checked the last. No real movement.

I'd presume the 2X heavier ACP round would be more prone than a 115/124 grain bullet, doesn't seem to happen.

Crimp jump has more to do with the weight of the revolver - those scandium .357 S&W’s had a warning about not shooting anything over 125 gr as the recoil was consistently harsh enough to pull bullets from cases. I think the LCR is just light enough to do it sometimes, but the Charter and the SP101 are heavy enough that it shouldn’t be an issue.

My Blackhawk that shoots 9mm, 38 and 357 Magnum is great fun and plenty accurate. I just wish it was double action. If they made a Redhawk (do they??) that shot all three I would go buy it today.
