Getting a Sig P226 Legion into CA

    Hello all,

My father wishes to gift me a barely used SIG P226 Legion 9mm SAO from North Carolina, and I now reside here in CA.

I was wondering if this is a legal action, given that we both use FFL dealers to make the handoffs, I have my background check and in-state ID, and he doesn't ship any mags that hold more than 10.

The guy at the gun shop said as long as he writes a letter denoting that he is gifting me this weapon, and not selling it for a profit, he can transfer any number of gifted guns (on OR off roster) to me in this fashion.

    Can anyone attest to this?

    Thanks!

And you must get a Firearm Safety Card.

If the mags are in excess of 10 rounds...and they probably are...they need to stay in North Carolina...or be "permanently" blocked.

I'm also available if your father wants to adopt me.

Dingo, it is absolutely doable. Also, some FFL can receive standard mags and will block them for you. Might be cheaper than buying new ones. Check with the FFL you want to use.

There is a whole thread about this type of transfer somewhere....looking....found it

Your father should include copies front and back of his Driver's License, with the gift note. And you're good to go.

I'll have to dig up the specific verbiage for the Intra-Familial Transfer/Gifting, but I do believe their was a limit of 5 transfers per calendar year for it. Don't know if that means 5 handguns total or 5 transfers of any number of handguns, but I only remember this since my father's FFL dealer in the state had to dig it up when I was gifting some handguns to my father.

Hey JGreen, welcome to the boards.

Lucky you to have this opportunity. If you ever decide to sell any of your gift please let me know. Cheers, Jack.

Does an out of state gift have to be “on-roster”...?
