Help with pre-lock S&W 586

Found a prelock, no-dash S&W 586 at a local gun shop but it's not in the best condition I have seen. Mechanically the gun is pretty much new and does not seem like it has been shot much. The barrel is in excellent condition and lock up is rock solid. It does have some pitting at the end of the barrel, on frame and on cylinder as show on attached pictures. The serial number is: JD9754. No dash. It does have the following numbers inscribed on the cylinder arm: B18, and X2916

- Does anyone know what year production this is?

- What would be a fair market value for something like this?

Cant help you on year but doesnt look like much of a turn ring on the cylinder so shot little carried alot probably.

Considering the condition $500 would be a good deal. $350-400 if you know they just want to off load it.

Do you plan on having it refinished? Shooter?

I'd say mid 80s, but it's should be a 3 letter serial no. " AJD9754"

Considering we're in CA, I'd say $550.00 minus the cost of hard chrome = price.

I wouldn't bother refinishing it, just use the finish to beat up on the price. Then just shoot it.

The blue tag in one of the photos shows the serial number as AJDxxxx. As a good shooter, I'd say it's a $450-$500 gun.

The "AJD" s/n prefix was used in '85 and '86.

Does it have the M stamp? Shooter grade with aftermarket grips, if you can get $500, get it. The numbers you posted are assembly and inspector numbers. Serial number is at the butt of the grip frame.

A little cold blue will easily clean the up wear marks up. Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do about the pitting. Just clean it up and make sure to remove any rust it may have.

SC of S&W 4th edition states the 586 model marked the first use of the the 3 letter 4 digit serial number starting with AAA001 in June of 1980. The no dash model was in production from 1980-1986. So Fawndog probably nailed it with "AJD" prefix and L-2 gave you the year (1985 or 1986). As an example, my 586 no dash dates to 1984 and has the lettered prefix "ADM".

Personally, I wouldn't bother reblueing it or even sending it back to S&W even if it doesn't have the M stamp. That pistol will be a fine shooter and will serve you well for many years in the condition it's currently in.

ETA- I agree with sfe, fair market value would probably be around $500.

$500 ought to make the seller happy.
A bit less will make you happier considering it lacks the original target grips ($150).
Fine revolver. Buy it!
Soak it in Kroil or CLP, then apply clp to the freckles and cover that with a good gun grease. After time it will take care of the freckles but might leave a bland blue spot. It's just cosmetic. Enjoy shooting it! Nice find.

I bought a 4" 586-2 in similar condition with the same ugly grips a few years back for $450. I wanted it as a hiking gun and the finish wear didn't bother me. I say that if you can get it for $500 or less it would be a decent deal.

With the exception of my P&R M27, it is the most accurate .357 I own and I will never get rid of it.

The picture makes it look better than it is. Somewhere along the way Bubba ground off the vertical grooves on the back of the grip frame.

Personal taste, but I hate Pachmayrs. Hogues are much better for me.

I picked up a similar one some years back for $350 a little more holster wear.

Dude, that’s a fine revolver for $500, got some character marks but would be a fine field/range/house gun. Don’t get fussy over aesthetics, just look at the rifling, crown and the forcing cone - if those are clean you’re good.
