    smith wesson serial lookup

Was wondering if anyone could nab the info, I recently got a Smith 940 9mm snub and was wondering if the mfg year could be more pinpointed. I believe they were only made from 1991-97 or so.

    It's stamped with MOD 940-1 BSR4xxx

If anyone has the info I'd be appreciative, thanks.

S&W Standard Catalog lists the 940-1 as being introduced in 1993, with a new firing pin design. Info is a little sketchy, variations include change to Uncle Mike's Boot grip for 1994.
I could not find a BSR prefix, is that what is stamped in the butt?

Heya, thanks for reply. Yes, BSR is stamped on the butt as well as inside the crane.

The Standard Catalog of S&W 4th edition dates the "BSR" prefix to 1995.

        ETA- Dash # years:
        940- Introduced in 1991
        940-1- 1993
        940-2- 1996
        Discontinued in late 1998.

I have the 3rd edition, guess it's time to update.

from what I read, the 4th edition is a companion book to the 3rd addition as opposed to a replacement, so having both seems to be the best set of information one can currently have.

FWIW I emailed S&W for details on a J-frame I picked up and they were able to send me the details of when it was produced.
