Do you prefer $1000 in your pocket or a Shadow 2 in your hand? Which one do you value more? We can only answer this question for ourselves.

      Found a used SP01 for $500.

Sent it off to CGW around thanksgiving and it’s heading off for finishing (entire gun in NP3+) this week.

With nearly all the bells and whistles you can imagine PLUS entire gun refinished I’m still under $2000 with shipping both ways.

Shadow 2 frame is worth the mark up alone.

The "California" markup has always been double on the S2. The S2 was meant to appeal to the competition market so the the features that shooters wanted in a production gun are in a shadow 2. The sp-01 is a great firearm but performance-wise you won't get the same feel as an S2 even with cgw parts. The higher grip, squarded trigger guard with rounded edges, longer barrel lenth, more aggressive checkering, extended mag release with a pretty decent trigger out of the box. It's like comparing two cars made by the same company at a high end and low end of their offerings.

There is a good chance most of those guys that are buying those S2s at double the msrp are sp-01 owners. Scores are definitely on the shooter and his skills, but satisfaction, comfort, and performance is why people drop $$ on high end guns.

True, the SP-01 will never be “equal” to the S2, especially if both are Cajunized. But the decision to spend the money is highly dependent on your individual situation and finances. If I were a young man stuck living in CA with a tight budget, I’d be very happy with an SP-01 with self-installed CGW parts. You will have a very nice gun better than most at the range. If your financial situation allows it, get the S2 and even send it to CGW for their magic, you won’t regret it.

If OP is here just looking for justification to buy an S2, you should get it. Yes, the CA premium sucks, but it is well worth it. Cajunize it yourself at home to save some money to lessen the initial financial pain.

I have the S2. I was tempted to buy an SP01 during the thanksgiving week as I held that SP01 in my hands for a bit. The clerk really thought I was buying it, but SP01 just wasn’t screaming hard enough because I’m used to the S2’s grip and checkering.

From a non-competition point of view, I have a CGW SP-01 with a Bull Shadow slide and a Tactical Sport slide and very happy with them. I’ve shot a Shadow 2 and don’t think it’s worth buying for $2K. I’ll save my money and buy the Dan Wesson DWX.

Cajunizing SP-01 is easy do at home and there are plenty of YouTube instructional videos. So you have a brand new CGW SP01 for less than $900 investment.

Maybe he meant the Tac Sport Orange. Yeah, that gun is better than a stock S2. Equal to the S2O.
