    USPSA Open build

    Hello again everyone!

If you read my CZ thread, you know I'm in the market for some new guns. One poster in that thread suggested a STI 2011. So, I've been looking at '2011' patterns, which seem to be the gold standard in Open.

Since I've not yet competed, I'm not sure if it'll be my cup of tea. In the event that I don't like it, I'd rather not shell out a crazy amount on a "race gun" from the get-go.

I'm throwing around the idea of getting a decent base and upgrading it as my skills improve; provided I stay in the sport.

Complete gun? Frame? How would you guys go about it? And it doesn't necessarily have to be a 2011 pattern, as long as it's something that can go against them.

Start basic and add as needed. It’s all fun, just start where you can, find what you need, and just try to beat your last score. Unfortunately in CA it makes the sports very pricey! But once you start meeting more people in the sports, you’ll come across deals. Most importantly have fun and be safe!

        Thanks for the replies, guys!

That's the plan - just to have fun. I already know I'll never be a winner. It's just for something to do.

I'll probably start competing with my favorite gun; a Taurus PT92. Most people won't understand that, but I just love that gun. lol!

The quandary I find myself in is this .. the roster doesn't apply to me right now, but it will soon. I don't want any of the "I should've bought" moments later on.

I just ordered a few nice guns, but it's just not the same. I want something with crazy upgrade potential. I need something to actually build. And some of those Open guns look straight outta Star Wars.

Single shot or not, is an STI my best route?

Any 2011 option is your best route, unless you can find a czechmate

yep, go for 2011 wagon is good.
try to contact SVI, and they would help you to build a gun, or get a STI single shot pistol from 2A zone.

Funny you mentioned Taurus 92, as I tried competing with my Taurus 92 in Steel Challenge format club matches and then a couple of USPSA club matches. It may be more accepting in the Production Division for you, I tried doing it in the early 90s and people laughed at me.

My advise to you is to try the top shooter’s open guns at your club. Try to catch them during after match practice or the regular shooting the breeze at the safe area.

Those are hard to maintain - you don't have readily available spare parts and, most importantly, you don't have many gunsmiths who work on them. Go to a match, have an issue, and nobody will be able to help you figure it out.

I shot Tanfoglio Limited Elite for two years in L10, even getting magazines was a nightmare. The restricted ones would be out of stock. My SVI arrived earlier in 2019 and I never looked back (after a short dry fire recalibration).

^^^ This. Even Czechmate is not an optimal route in CA...

If you're roster-exempt and want to have a proper competitive Open blaster without knowing much about various smaller builders out there, STI is the way to go.

If you want top of the line with bling and at the matching price point, SVI is the way to go (you also don't have to be roster-exempt to get an SVI).

These two are as sure a bet as it can be.
