Edit: The response to your post requires knowing where your hypothetical person intends to apply for a CCW. All of the issuing authorities have different rules. When I applied for and was issued a CCW, any gun that was registered to me was fair game for my IA. Then they changed the rules and said no off roster guns. Then they backed away from that slightly and said no single shot exempt guns. So, there is no universal answer in my experience.

I now live in free America and could carry anything I want, any way I want. Most times I carry a P365. Even with a 12 round mag its very concealable. I can sit with it and not be uncomfortable or print. I carry using the P365 in a Simply Rugged Cuda holster OWB. A tee shirt is all I need to cover the holster in the summer. I'm 5' 9' and weigh 190. Why P365? It's smaller, has a better trigger, higher capacity and better sights than a "comparable" Glock.

I wouldn't buy a P365 SAS. If you have to shoot from retention, the gases being vented from the barrel compensator cuts could toast your nipples. The SAS sight is not conventional, is not adjustable, and can be difficult to see (I've had issues picking up the sight in a gun store, but have yet to shoot one). Finally, and perhaps the best reason to buy the standard model, is because Sig sells a bare SAS slide for $249 in its store. The slide has no compensator cuts and works with you original barrel and spring. You can try the sight without shelling out big bucks for the gun and then deciding it doesn't work for you. FWIW, I have a P365 with a safety and one without. Neither has ever snagged during the draw stroke. YMMV.

When the optical ready Hellcats become more available, I'll probably buy one, because there are days when my tired old eyes have difficulty picking up the front site. With practice, picking up the dot is quicker and more accurate.

That bit about the SAS was very helpful. As for suggesting that I should look up the Penal Code section. I only asked about the legality of the Hellcat's standard 11 round magazine for the benefit of all the posters who suggested it as an EDC. Myself, I didn't need to look up the PC. Your point about different IAs not approving off roster guns is also a very good point.

I sold a Shield and G43 before settling on the P365, which is what I recommend (and/or P365XL if he likes the feel of it). Personally I'd avoid the P365 SAS, it's the answer to a non-existent problem and I've read enough reviews that the sights aren't what I'd want for low-light conditions.

If it were me I'd also bring a G34 MOS Gen 5 and CZ Shadow II, both rare as hen's teeth here and easy to sell at a nice profit if gets tired of them. And if he gets the competition bug he'll be set.

I have a P320 Compact and I'm not a huge fan of it, prefer the Gen 5 G19 and those bring more for resale as well. The Springfield Hellcat looks nice online, haven't shot one though.

This may be his last opportunity to have what he wants without the expense and hassle of finding an off-roster gun with a private party. Spend now, be happy later.
