Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm Problem

I dont think I would call them junk guns. maybe a bad lot, maybe something going on that nobody knows about yet, similar to the Glock 22s that have feeding problems if there is a light on them. But I think it is a bit premature to call them junk when there are tons of them out there, and this seems to be the first reports of something weird going on.Comment

I have the particular M&P pistol with the catastrophic failure at my office for an exam. It looks to me that the barrel developed a fracture and many rounds were fired before the barrel splitted in two. I think the psitol was strong enough to prevent an injury to the shooter.
I don't know for sure about the above pistol, but the failure of the other M&P's and Beretta pistols at the range are related to the ammo also. The Winclean ammo may be a culprit for the fail to extract and double feed malfunctions. I will be going to the range and will get a case of ammo for an evaluation.Comment

Thousands of rounds? If your M&P 9 has the same trigger pull as my nephew's pistol, you must have a very strong trigger finger now!

So, Gryff, drop the other shoe; what caused it?
The only Glock to have an "overpressure excursion" that I have observed was a 9mm (G34) and it was caused by a squib. (And, no, it wasn't my G34!)G17, G19, G21, G21SF (2), G26, G30, G30SF, G34, G37 (2), G38, G39Comment

It is for sure NOT a junk gun. I have over 12,000 rounds through my MP9, not a single firearm related issue, no FTE, no FTF. no light strikes at all. I've had ammo not fire at all, but never once have I had a problem with the weapon.
If fact it has replaced my ultra-reliable USP .40 as my primary HD/SD handgun.
Bad batches happen in every industry; I've had an entire series of 50+ server HDD's (only 6 months old) fail within 1 week of each other... same batch... from a company I trust without question...
I don't think they are junk HDD's just for that. I've had far more others of the same HDD going on 10 years without issue...
Long story short, good gun, maybe poor QC on that batch; maybe the steel wasn't heat treated enough that day...- Beretta NEOS 4.5" .22

All valid points but S&W has a bit of history of putting out bad semi-autos. I've owned several.
Topgun, please post any findings. For the record, I've shot a lot of WinClean ammo through my two main pistols (Ed Brown 1911 and a Glock 17) and I, personally, haven't had any issues...Comment

Instructor Todd Greene put 50,000 rounds through his M&P-9...and it was still kickin."I am the bastard son...The expendable one...

That's a shame to hear about. I have had an M&P9 for about 17 months. The only problems I had were FTE using low pressure reloads. Never had a problem with factory ammo.
I like the pistol very much, but I WILL be inspecting it every time I clean.
Thanks for the update...
