    642 Performance Center Question

    Hello everyone,
Recently got bit by wheel guns particularly snub nose revolvers after picking up a S&W model 60-7. Now have my eyes on a hammerless J-frame and wanted to know from owners of the 642 PC version, specifically model 10186 like the one below.

From what I understand from the S&W website is that it features a PC tuned action, cylinder cut for moon clips, and some polishing throughout. Whereas the "PRO" model features only has the cylinder cut. FWIW I did add the Wilson Combat trigger spring kit to my 60-7 and wanted to know how the 642 PC trigger feels in comparison (or at least what I should expect). The local gun store near me only has the standard 642.

Also I did look into the Ruger LCR and although the trigger pull is much "nicer", I short stroked it a few times at the range . Will probably try it one more time before fulling deciding (or just get both ).

    Thanks in advance!!!
    Vinny

If you haven’t shot a 642, try before you buy. I tried a friends, bone stock the trigger was at least 15lbs, I put a Wolff kit in it to get it to 10lbs or so. Either way it’s painful to shoot, my trigger finger lasted only a few cylinders. A stainless 640 is a much nicer shooting gun. As for the PC guns, the action tuning is pure BS. Save your money and get a Pro, then spend the rest on a spring kit and tuning.
Oh, and look VERY closely at the gun you’re going to buy, S&W quality is not what it used to be. Poor machine work, barrel alignment issues and more can be an unwelcome surprise.

      I

Bought mine used, but it’s still in good condition throughout - trigger feels nice, no stacking and constant throughout. Not the lightest in the world compared to say, a tuned 627 and the like, but good.

Not sure if it was worked on before I got it, but I like it as is and even shot my first IDPA match with it
if I hook my trigger finger, I can stage it easily.

        The 642 is 14.4 oz, I used to own a 360 PD 11.7 oz
They are not fun to shoot at all, not even with 38 spl loads, but great for carry.

That exact revolver is in my carry rotation, only change is I swapped the grips to hogue boot grips. I think the trigger is great, fires very accurately for me, than again I’m partial to revolvers and am very confident with a double action trigger.
Action is definitely smoother than my non PC 442.

I got a great deal via PPT on a BNIB 642 Pro and installed an Apex Duty/Carry kit for less than $20. I like it just fine. I figure that now the trigger is as good or better than the PC version.

I did the same (Hogue boot grip) on my 442. My favorite carry revolver and a LOT of fun to shoot. The pinky rest on the boot grip does the trick and I can shoot this gun (accurately, I might add) indefinitely at the range.

              LOVE this gun!

                Really liking those grips...Altamont?

Buying a 642 Pro and adding a trigger kit is also another good option. Will plan to try out a standard 642 next time I'm at the range.

Performance Center used to mean "fine trigger." All the recent PC revolvers I have needed separate trigger job to make them good.

Not sure how the 642 PC comes out, but you might want to try one before you commit. The trigger can be nasty...

Unfortunate if that's the case for PC revolvers, which after doing more research the expense seems more toward cosmetic (shiny this and that, lightning cuts here and there, etc.). Really make the PRO more appealing - definitely try to handle one if available.

                      Thank you everyone!!!!

                          Second this!!!

S&W QC is not what it was.

I have a 627 PC 2.5" 7 shot that was sent back to S&W due to a canted barrel. It was shooting 3" left at 15 feet. They corrected the issue through warranty. The "tuned" trigger is heavy in both D/A and S/A. Especially compared to my 629 3" 44 mag, which is smooth and light S/A from the factory.

Find yourself an older S&W until they improve their current quality issues.

Also remember what the intended purpose of the J frame snub nose. It is a deep concealable "belly gun". Not a tack driver for 50 Yard shots! It's good for face to face contact, within 7 yards or closer, as is it's intended purpose. Pain and stinging your hand or finger is a moot point compared to saving it your life!

The more you sweat in peace, the less you bleed in war!

                          1*

                            Smith wesson QC=

                            - barrels not torqued enough and eventually shift to the shooters left causing front sight to be off 12 o'clock position and more at 11 o'clock...

                            - bought a 640 pro. The cylinder star was too thick.. didn't sit flush with the cylinder face making the moon clips unusable

                            - right now I have 2 NEW frames back at Smith wesson under warranty for QC issues...

                            Very fail...
