    Smith & Wesson Model 48

Every ten years or so I develop an illogical, all-consuming lust for a certain handgun. This time around, it's the S&W Mod. 48, specifically one with a six inch barrel.

I've watched all sorts of videos and it seems one sweet revolver and I'm just itching to pull some money out of the savings and visit my LGS - but one thing is stopping me:

In all those videos, I didn't see anyone manage to get a group where any of the bullets touched. I don't know if it was the shooter's proficiency or just the way the gun is.

Can you owners enlighten me as to over-all accuracy?

In my early years I had the 48,with an extra 22LR CYLINDER. Accuracy with 22LR was not as good as the Rimfire magnum.I discovered S&W bored the magnum barrels to .224 where as regular 22 was .223. If RUGER and others with dual cylinders use barrels with .223 ,I would suspect the magnum would suffer accuracy issues and may have increased pressures. I don’t know what S&W is using these days.

Not much of a revolver guy, but my stock 48 is the easiest one to shoot D/A. For me, the major difference compared to other Smiths is due to the 22WMR. For me, it's a fun gun.

Accuracy? After shooting it a couple of times, I can put most rounds S/A within 2" @ 10 yards -- the same thing I can do with my fav Ruger MkII easily. D/A, maybe 4-5" @ 10 yards.

I've got a no-dash 8" that is a tack driver. From a bench rest I can shoot 1" groups at 25 yards on a good day. It makes a great varmint gun, although it seems to be slightly less accurate with the new non-lead ammo.
