This has happened to me TWICE with a P226 — both times during training classes. The magazine disconnect spring gets bent or breaks and then interferes with the operation of the magazine, to the point where the gun won’t fire at all. I have since removed all magazine disconnects from my guns that had them.

First thing I did with my P238. The mag disco is a complete afterthought in that gun. At least with S&W 3rd gens they were built in purposefully.

To prevent a ND during disassembly? I guess the firearms safety test isn't working to educate people

It would've been an advantage to that SBSD deputy who lost control of her sidearm to the perp to drop the mag though.

There is a pic floating around that shows a CHP officer ejected his mag on his SW when a perp was gabbing for the gun, we have no idea if it was intentional or not:

But I have also seen dashcam videos of cops in gun fights and the first thing that happens when they draw down on the bad guy is the mag gets accidentally ejected. When your fine motor skills go out the window because of that adrenaline dump, anything can happen. I will try and find one of those videos.

It was likely intentional due to CHP training on mag disco, but then again who really knows.

It is taught that anytime there is a struggle for your side arm, you tap-rack after breaking free to clear any potential malfunctions caused during the struggle.

The story I heard was that people were getting the two steps "drop magazine, eject round" reversed.

That sounds like a training problem. Instead of just teaching the steps by the numbers they need to teach the reasoning behind the procedures. Keep fingers off the trigger until gun is clear. Remove magazine to stop ammunition feeding. Cycle slide to eject chambered round and to visual/feel empty chamber. Secure ejected round and magazine away from the gun.

Other safety issue with mag disconnects, when on a range and having to "unload and show clear", then hammer / striker down.

But u have to reinsert mag before doing that, so u might have just loaded a round...

The other major problem with a mag disconnect safety is that they don't work if your finger was applying any amount of pressure on the trigger when you removed the magazine. If you have already moved the trigger past the safety block, then remove the magazine, the gun will still fire, despite having a magazine disconnect safety and no magazine in the gun.

I don't care for them since it is the only mainstream type of safety on a pistol that you can't tell after the fact if it was working.

I know of several accidents where people were trained to trust their safeties and didn't realize that the magazine disconnect safeties do not work all the time.

This is more of a problem with the way USPSA does unloads vs anything on the gun. Their method also does not work with rimfire pistols. Rimfires tend to damage themselves when dry fired.

I still don't like to firearms equipped with magazine disconnect safeties. I generally opt for the factory model that does not come with it.

I won't "Bubba gunsmith" to disable safety mechanisms.

There's nothing really "bubba" about it.

Exactly. In almost every case, it is a simple binary choice. It is either there or not. And after it is gone it is like it was never there. Nothing Bubba about it, in fact it is usually more Bubba’d with the mag disco parts left in because in most cases they were an afterthought add-on of extra crap to appease someone’s Nanny.

There are some guns that can be Bubba’d though, like the Fn 5.7. There is a right way to remove the function, but most people go with the Bubba way on that one because it easier for them.

And in some cases you remove parts that leave extra holes then in the frame (like the Sig P238) or trigger (like the high power) and then you either run them empty or with filler pins that do nothing, and that is kinda Bubba but I’d rather do that than leave in a Rube Goldberg collection of stuff that I don’t need and that could break down rendering the gun in-op.
