    G22 .40 to 9mm Conversion Questions

ok, i decided to pick up another glock. i decided to go w/ the G22 RTF as it seems that it's available widely and hovering at $500 which is a good price point.

i want to be able to use 9mm primarily, but have the option of using the .40 barrel. i understand that kkm offers a barrel conversion, and i wanted to know what everyone's thoughts are on this. anyone have actual experience doing this? will i have to change the ejector as it is a slightly different in size? Is it just a quick and easy barrel swap or will i have to modify/change anything in particular? Any issues using the 9mm magazines w/ the G22?

before someone says wait for the G17 RTF (which has yet to be DOJ certified), i want to be able to swap out barrels and it is my understanding you can't go from 9mm to .40.

I had a Glock 24 which is the 6 inch long 40. I bought a KKM 9mm conversion barrel for it. To be honest, it was a pain in the but and nothing but frustrating. My plan was to be able to shoot 9mm at all the local USPSA and 3 gun matches and later down the road, shoot 40 at the major matches. I ended up selling the whole upper and 9mm barrel.

Many people have good luck with the KKM barrels but not me. It wouldn't cycle my minor power factor reloads which my 17 would. This was due to the heavier slide, I had to drop down the lightest power recoil spring and even then it would short stroke or not feed properly. I had every kind of jam imaginable with the KKM.

Also, the KKM has a match chamber, which is good if you are shooting "non glocked" brass. Since I was shooting reloaded brass that had been fired before in a glock, the KKM wouldn't fully chamber a lot of rounds. I ended up having a couple of ruptured casings which blew hot buring powder all over my hands. I fired all the same ammo from each batch with the KKM 9mm barrel back to back with my 17 and my 17 ate everything up without a hiccup

When I tried factory ammo, Winchester White box 115gr wallyworld special, the gun still would have a jam or two every 100 rounds. On paper from a rest, the factory 17 was much more accurate than the KKM with factory loads and reloads. I had a friend of mine shoot the gun and he has a grandmaster card with a Glock in USPSA and he couldn't get the KKM barrel to group good.

I really wanted my gun to work with that barrel and I tried a lot, but basically it boiled down to, it was less accurate and less reliable. The gun ran 100% with the factory 40 barrel and was accurate too, but 40 is a lot more expensive to shoot. So I'm back to using my 17 and I'm happy with it.

You might luck out and get a good barrel from KKM. I would also look into Barsto. They make great barrels. I'm sure there are tons of really happy people with KKM conversion barrels but I'm not one of them.

          Correct, you can't put a .40 barrel in a G17.

I don't know if Lone Wolf is more popular than KKM but people claim varying degrees of success with these barrel switches. The ejectors are different but many people have great success with only changing the barrel.

If you want a Glock .40 that you would shoot 9mm at the range, a G22, G23 or G27 is the ticket. You can also add .357 barrels too.

The conversions are frowned on as carry or sd guns though.

glockmeister has 'em for $499 w/ 10 rd mags. shipping is about $20-30. they are currently taking pre-orders for G17RTF as well. if you buy any parts from them (extended mag release, extended slide release, night sights, etc.) they will install it for free before shipping.

it does not sound like the barrel conversion is 100% or even 66%... is it really hit or miss? has anyone do a barrel swap from .40 to 9mm w/ out any issues?

I've had a lot of malfunctions with my 40-9 conversion barrel for my G35, stay away from it.

I've swapped a buddies G17 barell into my former G22 with no problem over a few hundred rounds of 9mm. I was even able to use my .40 mag to feed 9mm.

I have had mcuh success with my G22 RTF and a lonewolf 40-9 barrel, using stock glock 17 mags.

I have a Glock 23 with a Storm Lake 9mm conversion barrel. I've fired at least 400 rounds through it and it hasnt had any problems. I also use a Glock 19 magazine, but it seems to work fine with the .40 cal mags too.

okay, i bit on the conversion barrel because i like the new RTF. i ordered a G22RTF w/ the following installed:

-KKM SS conversion barrel .40 to 9 for a G35 (meaning it will be protruding from my G22 about an inch)
                          -Meprolight true dot NS
                          -extended slide stop lever
                          -extended slide lock
                          -extended mag catch
                          -backstrap channel insert
-stainless steel rod assembly (rep stated it should cycle the 9mm fine w/ the standard .40spring)
                          -9mm ejector

for a grand total of $807 shipped. not too bad. i was about to go w/ a G34, but wanted the new RTF and a .40 (my first).

i'll report on it in the next month or so...
