My little range has steel from 25' out to 400yds.

No rules but your own. Buy more targets and the distance problem solves itself.

Most targets in IDPA/USPSA are in the 10 to 20 yard range. I wouldn't shoot steel any closer than 15 yards.

10 yards is no problem if you angle it right. Even a 50 yard handgun target can pose a threat of ricochet if the angle is incorrect.

Right now the targets are angled down and to the left. All of the bullets and splatter have been to the left between the Silhouettes and the round gongs (in the attached picture)

I have been shooting them at about 20 yards.

I shoot steel wit 9 mm pistol regularly at 10 yards without issue.

You could always switch to frangible projectiles.

I'm super jealous! Looks like a great spot for a range, the land is contoured perfect. I never had enough land to have to worry about starting forest fires on my private shooting range, so I'll just stay quiet on that part.....

Put some old tires around the steel and catch most of the splatter.

I too used to have a shooting on my property.

But I had to cement it in so I could park a pair of 2019 Lamborghini's.

Same... unfortunatley I had to get rid of my little 300x100 yard range to pave over for my landing strip for my Cesna smfh

Thanks for all the responses guys. I have never shot at a formal range, so I was looking for input on how far people typically shoot steel and you answered my questions.

As far as the fire danger goes, I am pretty careful and make sure that I do not shoot steel core bullets. Only lead and copper here. There is also more clearance between the targets and the brush than it appears in the pictures.

Oh and for the record “Cessna” is spelled with two ss…

I 'm a bit late to this conversation, but take a look at plastic reactive targets by Newbold. These are polymer and designed to let bullets pass-through so that there is no risk of splatter and you can practice up to contact range proximities.

As your steel targets become farther away, the issue of storage and hauling becomes an issue if you are not able to leave them out. For that case you might consider constructing a series of small concrete boxes for storage placed along the range in increments out to the end (if we are only going 100 yards, just one will do well).
I would also invest in some grading to widen your range, and for training, a larger area to set up targets in different directions will open up a plethora of options, including vehicles, night shooting, portable shoot-house, etc.
