    XD 45 Ammo

    Hi Guys,

(I did a search, looked through about 5 pages of results and didnt see anything, but thats not to say I didnt miss it)

I am not a big handgun guy as I mostly shoot rifle. Wanting something more geared for home defense (other than my shotgun) I recently picked up an XD 45 and have a question about ammo. I've noticed 230gr seems to be mostly what people are using, but are there certain brands and or types that the XD45 "likes?" What do you use? I was looking at remington UMC fmj, pmc bronze fmj, federal fmj, all 230gr, but wanted to check here before I order any.

    My ammo priorities are: reliability>accuracy>cost.

I am slowly building a reloading kit, but figured I'd buy some factory stuff first and start saving up the brass.

thanks in advance for your help.

It all works. I've never had a failure with any of them.
Out of all the cheap brass ammo the Federal American Eagle is marginally more accurate than WWB, UMC, or Blazer Brass. Buy what ever costs the least.

These days any .45ACP ammo that you can find at a fair price is good ammo.
The ammo that I like are my 200 gr LSWC reloads at around 5.50 per 100 rounds and my 230 gr FMJ at around 9.00 per 100.

FMJ is great for plinking. Use some hollow points for home defense. PMC Starfires are pretty good for that.

What Chris said. I've fed my XD45 fmj, swc, wc, hp. It takes anything I put in it. I also like the Federal for plinking ammo.

One of the nice things about the xd is it will eat anything you feed it

Well if you want a good HD I would use the Winchester White Box aka Value Packs. Thise out of the box have more velocity and impact pressure for a factory loaded cheap but effective ammo. Either way with a .45 I believe a 230FMJ does just as good as a HP. So if you want decent price plus stopping power then WWB is the best al around bet for every situation

I cannot get my 200 lswc loads to feed into my xd45. The bullet catches pretty hard on just before the shoulder. I am sure there is a bullet seating that would work with the xd, but I am not willing to compromise a load that works in all my other frames. IMHO stick with the round nose.

I agree with Dexter, my XD always has trouble feeding SWCs reliably. Might have just been my pistol, but alot of folks on XD TALK say the same thing.

I've never had any problems feeding SWC. Honestly, I've only read this from people on forums and I think more people get it to work than not. I know several other people who've had no trouble as well. How are you guys loading? Progressive? Do you check your cases in a case gauge before you load?

Seat to about 1.235" with most any LSWC and it will work.
I like 5.1gr of WC231, 4.8gr of AA#2, or 4.8gr of tightgroup for target loads.
The XD's have tight chambers. Pay close attention when loading, inconsistencies will lead to poor feeding. A good crimp will help; do this in a separate stage from seating.

Not saying it isn't possible, but Jeremy at Springfield Custom (works on XD's) even said it is not recommended (SWC's in an XD). If yours works, great....haven't tried them in mine though...

You'll never hear any manufacturer recommend reloads, for liability reasons.

In my XD, my reloaded LSWC have a problem feeding with about every 5th or 6th one. Since I don't have any other 45 that I reload, I traded my LSWC for FMJ and JHP. The ball ammo works a lot better.
