AR pistol transportation

I know that you have to lock up pistols in a case or have them in the trunk to transport them legally. My question is, if you have a AR lower that is marked pistol and was registered/drosed as a handgun, do you have to lock it up also if there is no upper attached to it? I think the answer is yes but wanted to see. The same would go with if you were driving somewhere with just a Glock or a 1911 frame. Is there anything in the law that says the gun has to be in a functioning state or is it fine if the gun is disassembled.

I know the easy solution is to just throw it in the trunk but many suv's don't have a trunk.


Another question, can you legally put a 16 inch or longer barreled upper on a AR lower registered as a pistol?

Not sure about transport of just the lower, but once you make the pistol into a rifle, it can never go back. And if you didn't have a stock on it, it would be an illegal rifle. I think there is a upper limit on pistol barrel length in CA. I'm not absolutely sure of this, but it what I've understood the law to be

1. A pistol lower is a handgun and thus needs to be locked up when transporting it like a regular handgun.

2. Upper barrel length on a pistol doesn't really matter. Just do not ever put a stock on a pistol marked and registered lower.
