Handgun sale from CA resident to CA resident

If I sell handgun to another CA resident, can I ship the handgun directly to the buyer's California FFL?

Or do I have to have my California FFL ship it to the other California FFL?

I know I can ship directly to an out-of-state of FFL.

Depends on the receiving FFL. Some prefer not to receive shipments from private parties, some don't care.

Yes you can ship direct. Shipping from an FFL dealer is unneccessary and he will probably charge you. You can ship it UPS Next Day Air only or Fed Ex Priority Overnight only. Declare it as a handgun, don't bother with US Mail because they don't ship handguns.

Edit, 8200RPM makes a good point. There is no law but some FFLs prefer receiving from FFLs only.

Make sure it is on the DOJ "not unsafe" list if you are shipping. Mark

USPS *does* ship handguns. But only FFL's can ship a handgun via USPS.

It is my understanding the the CA DOJ safe handgun list does not apply to private party transactions.

              You understand correctly.

However, PPT is ordinarily conducted with both seller and buyer at the same location at the same time. Your description suggests that will not be the case for this sale.

Many FFLs will not care to treat a 'split PPT' in the same way (or do a 'split PPT' at all), so it would probably be a good idea to talk to the FFL who will be handling the transfer.

Once you ship a gun to a dealer, it becomes their inventory per say.
