G17 mag question

I have a question for the Glock owners in the crowd. I need to pick up some Glock 17 mags for a new AR-9 build. Is there any difference between the Gen 4 and Gen 5 mags other than follower color that should influence my purchase?

I do not own a Glock so I have no experience with the topic of the question and a web search seemed to only indicate follower color and shape of the bottom end if I had a G19X, which I do not and have no plans to obtain.

There are a few different (shaped) followers, but I have three that all work.

The new magpul horizontal bottom magazines should look better on an ar than regular glock mags. You also get side ammo indicators.

Even down to G26 mags will work fine.


If getting older mags swap out the follower for 9MM3 followers, they will feed and load better than the 2138 followers.

I considered G26 mags until I added a Techwell magwell to the AR9. I don't think the G26 mags would extend out past the bottom, which would make them more difficult to insert.

Big glock sticks from April was the whole reason I built an AR9. 10s would be gone in an instant.

My last round lock back works best with magpul and G5 mags.

I agree that Freedom week was a "blessing" in this regard. However, I need the 10's for new activity of Action Steel where I am shooting 5 strings of 10.

Magpuls are nearly half price. The g19 sized ones are even cheaper. Almost two pmags for price of one oem mag. Makes for comp kits a bit cheaper when you need 4-5 mags to run a course.

I'm running the stern defense adapter with their mag well and the g19 mags fits fine in the mag well.

Mr Potterfield over at Midway was kind enough to offer me a substantial birthday discount so I went with the G17 Gen 5 mags for my AR9.

If I can borrow someone's clone mag at the range to verify compatibility, I may try something different in the future. However, my lower manufacturer recommended factory mags, so I went that way for now.

I find it interesting that there is not a table format for Glock owners that shows mag Gen vs pistol compatability at a glance with foot noted mag differences if any. Vendor statements of compatibility seem to vary with one vendor saying it works in G17 and G34 while another adds G19 and another says everything but G19x.
