I have seven of the 7 round Sig brand mags for my P238s and they have all worked fine, including the one I bought this year. Sounds like you might have a dud or some other problem. Good luck!

Sitting in your house and hand cycling rounds in magazines doesn't really tell you anything.

Go shoot it. If it happens when you shoot it, you might have an issue.

I'll bet it doesn't do with the flush 6 rounder, which seat perfectly in the magazine well. Do you have a 6 rounder?

May be wiggling it slightly with your pinkie or slightly bumping the magazine release while shooting.

What part of the mag exactly is getting hung up on the mag catch, is it the follower?

Before you do anything - go shoot the gun and see if the problem exists while firing.

I would

1) Disassemble the magazine and check the body - specifically the slot for the mag catch for any burrs
2) Check the follower for any burrs OR scratches indicating something was rubbing on it. There might be a piece of metal that's rubbing or catching the on the slot as it moves up..
3) Check the spring to make sure there aren't any nicks or kinks that might cause it to hangup on the magazine body itself (specifically the magazine release slot)

The next thing I would definitely do (but would depend on your skill level) is to remove the magazine catch from the frame and examine the shelf.. Is it too long? is there extra material hanging off.. etc .

All these things when "stacked" together can cause the ammo to feed poorly. I do this with all my competition pistols and mags. You might have one or some of these "out of spec" conditions and never see a problem. My attitude towards reliability is that it's better to do all these kinds of preventative measures first rather than wait and see if there are issues.

TLDR
The sig 238 is a basic pistol.. if something is impeding the ammo from moving up it's likely a bent follower, bent magazine body, or both, or the shelf on the magazine release is rubbing on the follower (it's too long)..

I would mention ammo , but it doesn't sound like it since rounds 1 thru 4 feed..

It's a common issue that only happens with the 7 round mags. If you google it, you will see a bunch of people swapped out their mag release spring and it solved the problem. Since some here say they dont have an issue, I would be curious to know if Sig has taken care of the problem in newer guns, or maybe there was just a bad batch of springs that went out. Been a while since I looked into it and I dont recall seeing anything about it being a generational thing (old vs new) but who knows. Swapping the mag release spring did seem to be the fix though, there were threads with pages and pages of people saying that it immediately fixed the problem.

Edit, didnt ask if it's a brand new gun & mag but for some reason I had assumed this purchase was for a used 238. If its brand new then I guess that answers the question about new vs old. Either way, I would look into swapping the spring, or Sig would probably also be able to do it if you want to ship it.

No issues with my two OEM 7 round mags and my two Springfield 911 7 round magazines. The SA 911 magazines are significantly cheaper and function well in my P238. I use the 911 mags for range only and carry only OEM
