      Freddie,

In CA that basically means most rifles over 50 years old. Handguns still must go through an FFL 1 (unless you physically go out of state to get it, in which case you have to register it upon returning).
Go check out this website: www.gunboards.com and check out their forums and sponsors on the front page.
It's dedicated to collectors of military surplus guns. Lots of terrific information and good people. I bought that Russian SKS I sold you from someone there. The also have a list of sponsors from whom you'll be able to order guns.
Here's just some of what you can get...Mosin Nagants (there are many flavors...91/30a, m44s, m38s, Finnish variants). You can get 1,000 rounds of 7.62x54r ammo for under $100. Wide variety of 8mm Mauser rifles (again, ammo is cheap). Swiss K-31s (very nicely made and accurate...ammo is more, but you can get into reloading and save money). There are also French and Japanese rifle (which I don't know much about). SKSs if you can find one that's old enough...most of the current Yugos for sale are not yet at that 50 year mark. US Military surplus (Garands, 1903 Sprinfields, M1 Carbines) tends to be more pricey, but they're nice, well-made guns. If you're interested in an M1 check out http://www.odcmp.com/ which is an outlet through which you can purchase a surplus Garand. I would definetly start with that gunboards website I posted above...read what people have to say, ask questions. I'd also recommend buying some of the less expensive military surplus rifles (K-31s especially) as they're a bargain now and will likely only increase in value. I'd also order a like new Yugo SKS or 2, even if I don't shoot them, just because they should be worth more than the $100-150 they now sell for now in 5 years.
I remember going to a gun store once and walking past a crate of new Norinco SKSs they were selling for 70 or 80 dollars each. I was dumb then (barely old enough to buy a gun) and just assumed anything that cheap had to be crap. Well, if only I'd known...I'd have bought as many as I could.

If you really want to start collecting C&R stuff, I would recommend getting a CA COE also. Most reputable dealers will cash and carry with both C&R and COE(Turners will not!). Plus you are not bound by the one a month pistol law. The COE will pay for itself if you travel the state much.

As for C&R items, Mosins are a great deal. Plus they are a blast to shoot. The Enfields are a good buy also. Just stay away from the Indian or Pakastani ammo. Lately I have been on a pistol binge. Old Colts, odd Spanish pistols and FN/ Browning stuff. You just have to look.

Have used my C & R to purchase the following:
Winchester Model 53 in 25-20 (by mail)
Martini Model 12 in 22 Hornet (by mail)
CZ52 in 7.62x25 (bought in Texas and
          brought home)
I also have it on file at Midway and get dealer pricing. This alone is worth the "price of admission".

CA COE- California Certificate of Eligibility.

Basically the DOJ does a backround and fingerprint check. I found a link at the DOJ website: http://caag.state.ca.us/firearms/forms/pdf/coeapp.pdf .

The Certificate of Eligibility is required to have by Cal DOJ in order to get your C&R.

Not really. You can get your C&R and not get a COE. The COE just makes it easier to buy C&R firearms within the state.

Umn.... no, that is not correct. The C&R is a Federal license with the only Federally-required local component being to notify the Chief Law Enforcement Officer of the area you live in. The COE is a state-issued certificate that does provide additional benefits to the holder, including some specific to Federally licensed C&R collectors.

This is at least the second time this erronious information has come up here this year. Would you mind telling us where you heard this? We should correct it at the source.

                        A COE isn't required for a C&R in CA. I have a C&R FFL, but never got a COE

                            Places to use your C&R...

It sucks to get all those catalogs, mostly full of stuff we can't buy here, though

Interesting. When I was seeking a C&R, DOJ told me over the phone I needed one. So, I got one and then obtained my C&R.
