I'm going to try it with just the magazine first.

It's a joke. I read everybody's replies. Mag, barrel, slide. I get it.

I'm surprised that you haven't tried the conical breech face mod yet.
I hear it's all the rage these days.
You simply center a 1/2" extra long drill bit on the firing pin hole and hog out the breech until a .40 case will fit.
You can do this at home with a hand drill.
            Easy peezy.

It's no more finicky in a single stack than it is in a double stack 2011 and 75% of people shooting in USPSA Limited division are running a 2011 chambered in 40. As mentioned above, loading long (around 1.180" OAL) alleviates most of the issues.

40 makes a lot of sense in USPSA Single Stack (which is what I am assuming the OP is after). You can get 10 round mags that fit in the equipment box. This allows you to have one gun for Single Stack-Minor (10 rounds) or Single Stack-Major (8 rounds). Its also really nice to have a 40 1911 if you also shoot Limited because you can use the same load for both.

I turned a Kimber .45 into a .40 S&W gun. Complete top end, cut frame for W/N ramp. I had the barrel, so it cost me a slide and internals. I like the way the .40 shoots in a 1911, and .40 S&W brass is easier to find at USPSA matches.

Once I installed the EGW higher mag catch, it feeds any length ammo. I have nothing but .40 S&W mags, haven't had a need to change to longer length ammo. Same ammo I feed my .40 S&W Caspian High Cap.

I should have put the qualifier in my previous post about factory .40 being finicky. Although I have seen far more troublesome single stack .40 1911s than 2011s. The Barsto 2011 I had ran pretty much everything.

So, that leads us to a couple of questions; is the OP going to be reloading and what's the purpose of going to the .40 S&W?
