You can’t go wrong with a Glock at your first pick. But as others have stated, if there’s a range with rentals available I would try to test drive all the guns you’re interested in. You may be leaning towards one decision and then have that totally reversed after shooting a few guns. My first pistol was a sig p226 mk25. Definitely not a budget gun, but I was able to rent it and test it out before buying it.

a Sig SP2022 is also a really nice 9mm SA / DA pistol, it's a great value , kind of a hidden gem, you really get a lot for the money

If you go with the Glock, be sure to get proper ammo to break it in if you buy it new. I just got a G17 (first pistol as well). I got some 115gr FMJ, and about 30-40%+ of my first trip to the range with it was FTEs/FTFs. After looking into it, seems the FTE culprit is the light ammo, with FTFs possibly being related to the specific follower in the stock 10rnd mag. Or apparently I was limp-wristing it, though I never had an issue when using my buddy's G17. Gonna get a box of 124gr and give it another go.

OP try the 17 and the 19 first, one will fit your hand better than the other. It was the 17 for me. My hand was a bit crowded on the 19.

Try both before you buy.

Yeah, depends on how big your hands are when selecting pistols, not what people tell you on the internet. Your gun has to fit your hands.

Try both the G17 and G19 at a range before you buy either.

I'd get something with a hammer for your first gun. The reason I say this is because they are easier to dry fire practice with. You don't have to rack the slide each time like with a striker fired gun. I'd recommend a Beretta 92/m9 or CZ. The sig 2022 looks good too but never even held one. I own a Glock 26 and xd9 but for practice my 92fs is alot funner.

I'm looking for my first hand gun. I found out that CA has very limited handguns on the roster. I'm thinking of getting 3Gen Glock 17 or 19. Are they good choice for my fist handgun?

A Glock 19 is one of the best overall handguns you could get. If you can only have one, the 19 is large enough to shoot comfortably, but still small enough to conceal if you plan to get your carry license.
Before you buy anything, please go to a shooting range & try out as many different types as you can. It's a very personal decision, and you never know which firearm will work best until you try them out. Good luck!

I've got the single-hand trigger reset technique down for my G17, but I'll grant it's definitely not as quick & easy as a hammer.

Go with a revolver; get to know it and then a 1911 obviously. I'm not old school or anything. No really I'm not. My first was a Model 27 / 38/357 and my second was a Colt 1911. No regrets. Still don't have a glocky.

If you plan to compete in matches and such I'd recommend a Glock 34. For home defense and range shooting Glock 17. A 19 if you confident to get approved for ccw.
