My first Glock 21, Gen 2, from 1996 has finger grooves, and no rail.
My second G21, Gen 3, has grooves, and rail.
Some of the above illustrations may be only partially correct.

gen 4 has the double recoil spring the extra cuts make it incompatable with previous gens
it has a larger hole on the front of the slide too

I have a gen 2 Glock 21, no finger grooves, no rail. It was acquired when they first came out. I don’t think they ever produced Gen 1 Glock 21s.
